The authors describe a study that was conducted to provide better understanding of eating and body image concerns among clients in university counseling centers. First, they explored the prevalence of such concerns among stereotype‐congruent (White, heterosexual, female) and stereotype‐incongruent groups (e.g., ethnic/sexual minorities, men). Then, because some groups may use compensatory behaviors not adequately captured by current definitions of eating disorders, they specifically examined body image disturbance among these groups.  相似文献

A comparison of institutional enrollment data and counseling center service utilization data at 66 universities showed that neither ethnic minority students nor European American students under‐ or overutilized counseling services (Study 1). Data from Study 2 examining students in the general campus bodies at 45 institutions indicated that utilization of counseling center services for students of various ethnicities was predicted by the ethnic composition of the counseling center staff. Among students of color, utilization of campus counseling services was predicted by greater psychological distress, less family support, and a history of previous psychological problems.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of why college students seek psychological treatment by examining indicators of psychological distress. A secondary goal was to assess the utility of screening for treatment need via a brief self‐report measure of distress. Two samples (1 clinical, 1 nonclinical; N= 8,380) were examined via logistic regression analyses to identify meaningful predictors of treatment‐seeking behavior. Sexual minority group members are at a higher risk for mental health difficulties than are heterosexual individuals. The results of this study showed that college student sexual minorities were common in counseling centers and that they were more likely than heterosexual students to seek counseling. The results also showed that sexual orientation groups differed in meaningful ways from one another, and many sexual orientation groups reported higher levels of psychological symptoms than did heterosexual students.  相似文献

In 1916, French entomologist Paul Marchal published a seminal report on the contemporary state of agricultural research in the United States of America. His recommendations underlined the need for a close relationship between research and education, a factor vital to national survival in the aftermath of the Great War. Nearly 20 years after the Telecommunications Act of 1996, it is unclear how its mandates influence current parents’ mediation behavior. Parents of 2- to 17-year-old children (N = 1,431) were surveyed about their awareness and perceptions of the TV ratings system and use of the V-chip. Most (81%) parents knew about the ratings system and found it to be only “somewhat useful.” Only 16% of those parents had ever used the V-chip. Ratings awareness and perceptions and V-chip use varied with family characteristics. Policymakers should revisit how to provide better tools for mediating children’s viewing in this new information age.  相似文献

The authors describe the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH), a practice–research network of university counseling centers, and introduce the special issue of the Journal of College Counseling that features the work of the CCMH. The issue features five studies conducted by the CCMH, all of which were focused on the mental health and treatment needs of culturally diverse college students. Students in the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at the University of Maine were exposed to the cheese‐making process, within a lab setting of two hours, utilizing an accelerated recipe for a Queso Fresco‐style cheese. The purpose of this project was to provide students with a novel, hands‐on learning experience, which covered concepts of coagulating milk with enzymes and the treatment of curds during the cheese‐making process. The cheese recipe was tested three times by faculty and a teaching assistant to ensure standard results. The recipe, directions and procedures were adjusted and recorded. A standardized recipe and procedure were created for use in the student laboratory. Comparison of knowledge pre‐ and post‐experiment were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed‐Rank Test using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Thirty‐four students participated in the laboratory and when surveyed, expressed significant improvement in their understanding of the cheese‐making process (p <0.001). Students also rated themselves on a six‐step confidence scale from “not confident at all” to “very confident” in their understanding and ability in cheese‐making with 70.5 % of the 34 students participating reporting a three‐step increase in their confidence level. Students also completed a sensory evaluation of the recipe, utilizing a 9‐point Hedonic scale (1‐Dislike Extremely to 9‐Like Extremely), with over 88 % of students giving the product a positive overall acceptability rating. Through experience gained during the cheese‐making laboratory, students were able to apply concepts in food preparation, food science and sensory evaluation, all part of the curriculum content requirements of a DPD.  相似文献
