The Garífuna are an Indigenous, Afro-Latino group in Honduras whose distinct cultural, ethnic, and linguistic background has been unacknowledged and frequently misunderstood on a societal level and, consequently, in the schools that serve them. This study argues for the utility of a cultural mismatch approach, one applied primarily to U.S. settings, but which can be extended fruitfully to the Latin American context generally, and for Garífuna populations specifically. Through a comparative case study of 2 Garífuna communities, this study examines student, teacher, and administrator attitudes and perceptions toward culture, race, and language. Then a corresponding analysis of practices within 2 divergent schools is offered: One setting illustrates how a cultural mismatch between students and educators plays a significant role in the formation of an irrelevant education; the second setting demonstrates how mutual respect, caring, and culturally embedded teaching practices result in a relevant pedagogy for Garífuna student.  相似文献

The article presents the evolution of the bibliographic resources created by Gosudarstvennaia publichnaia nauchno-tekhnicheskaia biblioteka Sibirskogo otdeleniia Rossiiskoi akademii nauk (GPNTB SO RAN) [State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences] to provide information support to researchers of SO RAN. The components of these resources are described briefly: bibliographic databases, databases of abstracts, full-text thematic databases, and problem-specific databases. Undocumented families' rates of repatriation to Mexico from the United States have risen throughout the Obama administration, and this trend will likely increase under Donald Trump. This study describes the experiences of Mexican-born youth who grew up in the United States and are back in Mexico. While these children are participants in their families' migration, their input is rarely sought in decisions to leave or return to a country. This article shares transborder students' voices on their struggles to find their identities as Mexican, American, or some combination of the two. They reflect on their schooling experiences across countries, and how these challenges are compounded when they are new to learning in Spanish or indigenous languages in Mexico.  相似文献

Employees reported the history of their friendships with peer coworkers, rating the importance of several developmental influences and a variety of communication changes as their friendships experienced three transitions: acquaintance‐to friend, friend‐to‐close friend, and close friend‐to very close/almost best friend. Results indicate that in same‐sex friendships, the influence of workplace contextual factors (e.g., sharing tasks and proximity) decreased and the influence of extra organizational influences increased as the friendships became closer. In cross‐sex friendships, however, workplace contextual factors retained their importance over the development of the friendship, suggesting individuals in cross‐sex friendships try to maintain the boundary between work and personal spheres by keeping their friendships defined as a “workplace” relationship.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article explores the strategies think tanks (TTs) from Brussels, London, Paris and Ljubljana use to exert influence on European Union (EU) policy-making. The paper argues that European TTs mobilise symbolic, political and network forms of capital built at the European level to enhance their legitimacy, credibility and visibility in the Brussels policy-making scene. The paper examines how TTs convert these forms of capital using the examples of the symbolic value of the ‘TT’ label, the role of expert providers, the strategic ‘presence’ in Brussels, and their membership in TT networks, and states the particular importance of symbolic and network capital in the EU policy context, which contribute to the legitimacy of the EU policy-making itself.  相似文献
