While there is a growing body of work that examines disciplinary identity development, unlike qualitative work in this area, quantitative research has not fully incorporated the importance of different contexts, nor has it uniquely focused on underrepresented groups (in this case, women in physics). This study examines how the constructs posited by prior work as important for physics identity, as well as an additional theorized construct, may interrelate and affect female students' physics identity differently depending on the context. Context in this study refers to two different experiential levels in college. The constructs examined include performance/competence, recognition, and interest, as well as sense of belonging. In particular, we used structural equation modeling to examine the effect that these constructs have on the physics identity of two groups of female physics undergraduates: first year students and senior year students. The results reveal that the relationship of the theorized constructs with physics identity vary between the two groups as well as compared to prior research with broad college student populations (not just physics majors). Unlike broad college student populations, for our sample of female physics undergraduates, interest did not have a direct effect on physics identity while sense of belonging was significant only for senior year students. These results exemplify the importance of examining context or different types of student experiences when studying disciplinary identity development rather than generalizing previous frameworks to all contexts.  相似文献

Patients with type II Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) are more prone to Ischaemic Heart Disease (IHD). Although, oxygen free radicals are known to contribute to the development of IHD, conflicting reports are available regarding the antioxidant status in patients of NIDDM complicated with IHD. This study was undertaken to investigate the oxidative status in patients of NIDDM and to assess their correlation with plasma glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin and duration of diabetes. The levels of malondialdehyde were significantly increased where as levels of superoxide dismutase, Glutathione peroxidase and vitamin C were significantly decreased in diabetics without complications and non-diabetics with IHD when compared with the controls. The levels of malondialdehyde and Glutathione peroxidase were significantly increased where as levels of superoxide dismutase and vitamin C were significantly decreased in diabetics with IHD when compared with diabetics without complications and non-diabetics with IHD. The implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

The role of oxidant damage to red cells in sickle cell anaemia has been of interest in recent years. Although, available reports suggest that sickle cell erythrocytes are susceptible to endogenous free radical mediated oxidant damage there remains discrepancy in the status of antioxidant enzymes and antioxidant vitamins in these patients. In view of this, 107 cases of sickle cell anaemia (36 ‘SS’ and 71 ‘AS’ pattern—as confirmed by haemoglobin electrophoresis) were subjected to analysis of malondialdehyde, ascorbic acid, superoxide dismutase and albumin. The results were compared with 54 age and sex matched healthy controls. The results indicate a marked increase in lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase levels in both ‘SS’ and ‘AS’ types of sickle cell anaemia as compared to controls. Although no difference was observed in the levels of albumin in these groups the levels of ascorbic acid were significantly depleted in sickle cell anaemia patients. The results are indicative of enhanced lipid peroxidation along with imbalance in the pro-oxidant and antioxidant status in patients of sickle cell anaemia.  相似文献

There are many reasons why Indian open universities are adding online learning opportunities to their course offerings. Two universities, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), have been developing online aspects of their programs for some years. This article documents the experiences at IGNOU and then examines the situation for online development at YCMOU. Lessons can be learned from both experiences. These include being strategic in choosing which courses to offer, and in deciding which services to develop for which clientele. Choosing those that will bring the greatest enhancement in flexibility and efficiency for the least amount of new skill requirement from learners is likely to be of biggest benefit. Keeping cognizant of the computing context of learner sub‐groups and enhancing learning through additional optional online services is most likely to result in effective courses and quality student services while maintaining efficiencies in financial logistics.  相似文献

Many children have negative attitudes about older persons. This study used a pre‐posttest control group experimental design to investigate the effects of a guidance unit about older persons upon elementary school children in two schools. Significant results are reported. The experimental unit also proved effective for both boys and girls. Perceptions of children about the aging process and the elderly can be positively changed.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of UV-B irradiation on PI 3-kinase activity in human fetal hepatocytes. When cells were exposed to monochromatic (304nm) UV-B light, a significant increase in intracellular PI 3-kinase activity was observed in a dose dependent manner with maximal activity upon 1500 Jm−2 irradiation. At 1500 Jm−2 dose PI 3-kinse activity increased by 80% in membrane fraction of fetal hepatocytes of 25 weeks gestation. PI 3-kinse inhibitors wortmannin and LY294002 specifically inhibited the UV-B induced lipid kinase activity and blocked significantly the UV-B induced cell viability. The data suggests a correlation between cell survival and elevated levels of PI 3-kinase and suggest that UV-B irradiation at a dose of 1500 Jm−2 is ideal for fetal hepatocyte transplantation. Also, PI 3-kinase levels could be a representative marker for viable UV-B irradiated fetal hepatocytes for transplantation.  相似文献
