In the article we compare the approaches of 3 in-service teachers and 3 student teachers when they tried to solve a verbal
arithmetic problem in the classroom. Each interaction was studied using a System of Analysis that takes into account the cognitive
processes involved in the solution of a mathematic problem and describes the interaction at different levels showing what
is done and to what degree teachers and/or pupils are responsible for what is done. The results of the study suggest that
both groups of teachers are different in how they direct the student’s attention toward the essential aspects implied in the
resolution of word problem. On the one hand, the in-service teachers guaranteed students’ understanding of the problem before
dealing with the solution, while students teachers only did so when pupils committed errors. On the other hand, the in-service
teachers allowed a high level of student participation, while student teachers took a more prominent role so children’s participation
was lower.

The ability to integrate information that is separated within a text, such as connecting a character’s action to a goal stated earlier in the text, is a critical factor in narrative comprehension. In the present study, we analyze the ability of 9- and 11-year olds to integrate such information. In addition, we examined the effect of illustrations on integration process by using on-line comprehension measures. Participants read narratives that conveyed a character’s goal early in the text, and an action was described later on that was either consistent or inconsistent with the goal. Narratives were presented either with an illustration that mirrored the situation described in the goal, or without an illustration. The results show that 11-year-olds spent more time on the inconsistent actions than on the consistent actions; in addition, 9-year-olds detected the inconsistency when illustrations were provided. An additional finding was that working memory moderated children’s ability to connect actions and goals. These results suggest that children as young as 9 years form connections between characters’ actions and their goals during text processing, although they need an illustration to keep the goal information activated to detect the inconsistency. Illustrations’ effectiveness was interpreted in terms of extra processing of the characters’ goal.

This study explored the effectiveness of external representations presented together with compare word problems, and whether such effectiveness was moderated by working memory. Participants were 49 secondary school students. Each participant solved 48 problems presented in 4 presentation types that included 2 difficulty treatments (number of steps and language consistency). Data from errors and response times indicated that adding a graph to compare word problems helped accuracy (d =.60) and response time (d =.44). This effect was larger for difficult and cognitively demanding problems. Findings suggest that external representations might help problem-solvers build a mental model of the described problem situation. In addition, working memory was not found to moderate the effectiveness of external representations. 相似文献
