We have studied the efficiency of research in the EU by a percentile-based citation approach that analyzes the distribution of country papers among the world papers. Going up in the citation scale, the frequency of papers from efficient countries increases while the frequency from inefficient countries decreases. In the percentile-based approach, this trend, which is uniform at any citation level, is measured by the ep index that equals the Ptop 1%/Ptop 10% ratio. By using the ep index we demonstrate that EU research on fast-evolving technological topics is less efficient than the world average and that the EU is far from being able to compete with the most advanced countries. The ep index also shows that the USA is well ahead of the EU in both fast- and slow-evolving technologies, which suggests that the advantage of the USA over the EU in innovation is due to low research efficiency in the EU. In accord with some previous studies, our results show that the European Commission’s ongoing claims about the excellence of EU research are based on a wrong diagnosis. The EU must focus its research policy on the improvement of its inefficient research. Otherwise, the future of Europeans is at risk.  相似文献

Resumen

En un trabajo anterior (Galeote, 1995), en el que se examinaba la adquisición de diversos adjetivos dimensionales (grande-pequeño, alto-bajo, etcétera), no se encontraron indicios de que los adjetivos correspondientes a la dimensión de anchura (ancho y estrecho) comenzaran a ser dominados ni siquiera por el grupo de mayor edad (6;0 años). Ello era explicado por la enorme complejidad semántica de los mismos. El objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en examinar la adquisición de dichos adjetivos en un rango de edades más amplio (7 a 12 años). Los resultados obtenidos muestran de nuevo la enorme complejidad del significado de estos adjetivos, tal que sólo los grupos de mayor edad dan muestra de comenzar su proceso de adquisición. Se discuten estos resultados en relación con la estructura del significado léxico, uno de los temas más controvertidos en el estudio del significado y su adquisición.  相似文献

Abstract

While most equate Mexican Olympism with the 1968 Olympic Games, few know the drama of the event that laid its groundwork. From the creation of the Ministry of Public Education in 1921, cultural and military leaders heavily invested in sports infrastructure to help regenerate its rural masses, but by the 1940s, post-war modernizers sought the hosting of large international athletic events to boost its prestige, foment national pride, and prove to the world it was ready to springboard into modernity. This paper recounts the triumphs, betrayals, corruption, and politics of Pan-American sport and the Olympic movement in Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s that culminated in the improbable success of the 1955 Mexico City Pan-American Games.  相似文献

A method for computing the visible regions of free-form surfaces is proposed in this paper. Our work is focused on accurately calculating the visible regions of the sequenced rational Bézier surfaces forming a solid model and having coincident edges but no inner-intersection among them. The proposed method calculates the silhouettes of the surfaces without tessellating them into triangle meshes commonly used in previous methods so that arbitrary precision can be obtained. The computed silhouettes of visible surfaces are projected onto a plane orthogonal to the parallel light. Then their spatial relationship is applied to calculate the boundaries of mutual-occlusion regions. As the connectivity of the surfaces on the solid model is taken into account, a surface clustering technique is also employed and the mutual-occlusion calculation is accelerated. Experimental results showed that our method is efficient and robust, and can also handle complex shapes with arbitrary precision. This article discusses recent policy developments in Europe regarding Roma and Traveller integration and Early Childhood Provision. After a long history of oppression, Roma issues have recently become prominent on the EU policy agenda. The article discusses how these relate to developments in other areas of policy: the European children's rights agenda and the recognition that early childhood education and care is a key policy tool to combat social exclusion. It gives background information on Roma and Travellers in Europe and discusses the consequences of subsuming the various communities under one umbrella term: Roma. The EU Commission is concerned with responses from Member States to the European Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies. The article argues that in order to address Roma children's experience from a holistic perspective, social justice and equality need to be key elements of early childhood education and care provision and training. The European policy developments that frame the article are examined from a local vantage point: the experiences of Traveller and Roma children in Ireland and the Irish Preschool Education Initiative for Children from Minority Communities.  相似文献

Resumen

El índice h es uno de los indicadores bibliométricos empleados para estimar el éxito de la carrera profesional de un investigador. Se trata de un indicador que combina producción e impacto, y que elimina los sesgos provocados por las colas de la distribución de citas. Sin embargo, este indicador presenta limitaciones a la hora de discriminar entre investigadores con diferentes hábitos de publicación, penalizando a aquellos más selectivos, que no destacan por el número de publicaciones pero sí por el alto número de citas recibidas, frente a los grandes productores. En este trabajo se presenta una aplicación empírica de los indicadores de entorno, un complemento del índice h que considera la zona intermedia de la distribución de citas.  相似文献

Resumen

Intentamos aquí aplicar un esquema de interpretación que nos permita transitar desde el paradigma epistemológico moderno de simplicidad cultural, a partir del cual se ha venido construyendo el discurso educativo, hasta el paradigma de complejidad desde el que cabe establecer un nuevo horizonte hermenéutico-narrativo para la experiencia educativa. Será preciso indicar cómo una renovación del pensamiento pedagógico que alienta la multidimensionalidadpasa necesariamentepor la constatación del carácter interactuante del desarrollo cognitivo con el contexto cultural y que tal interactuación es esencialmente narrativa tal y como ha descrito J. Those in professional and academic fields generally perceive mentoring as a positive relationship that enhances the lives of protégés. Kram (1985 Kram, K.E. 1985. Mentoring at work: Developmental relationships in organizational life, Lanham, MD: University Press of America.  [Google Scholar]) posits that such relationships between dyads in organisational life are an evolutionary, developmental process. The purpose of this article is to explore protégés’ perspectives on their mentoring relationships within doctoral programs. In order to lessen the insurmountable distance between writers and readers that is often associated with a traditional research study, we employ an autoethnographic approach to research writing. We share our journey after having studied the mentoring relationships within our own doctoral programs. Qualitative data collected over a two‐year period consist of journal entries, email correspondence, and phone conversations. This research offers insight into the mentor–protégé relationship and processes, and it provides implications for practice for protégés and mentors, as well as future research directions.  相似文献

The Teaching/Learning Centre (T/LC) located in the Jacksonville State University College of Education is an award winning, on‐campus, after school tutoring‐program for a diverse population of K‐12 children. While the overall intent of the T/LC is to provide a practicum for teacher preparation, the T/LC has increasingly become a community resource for improving academic achievement among area K‐12 school students. The T/LC practicum allows the preservice teacher to interact with children by individualising a one‐on‐one tutorial within the university setting under university supervision. Preservice teachers gain additional professional practice through communication with parents, guardians, teachers, and professors. Preservice teachers gain confidence and self satisfaction while learning to interact with students from varying backgrounds in a caring and supportive manner.  相似文献
