Novels that prioritise the connectedness and strength of girls’ friendships without employing the pervasive trope of “mean
girls”—those who typically divide in order to conquer other girls—are potentially empowering in their refusal to perpetuate
limited and binary accounts of adolescent femininity. While Ann Brashares’ cult novel (now film), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005a; originally 2002) appears to be representative of this textual shift, underpinning the overt call to value girls’ relationships
is a deeply conservative, assimilationist narrative that relies on an acceptance of traditional patriarchal values. This article
analyses the ways in which the novel appropriates “multicultural difference” to valorise, sustain and naturalise the central
position and authority of patriarchy in the lives of young girls, regardless of their cultural heritage.
Kate McInally currently works as a research fellow, and teaches children’s literature at Deakin University, Burwood, Australia.
Her particular research interests are feminist, queer and Deleuzean theory, representations of girl–girl desire in young adult

An important aspect of learning to read is understanding how to use strategies to aid comprehension. Many actions such as skimming, using context to discern unfamiliar words, and taking notes to aid remembering can promote reading comprehension and learning. In this paper we examine aspects of knowledge and motivation that are critical to becoming a strategic reader. We emphasize that agents are strategic, not actions removed from contexts, and that self-guided learning depends on the intentions, perceptions, and attributions of learners. Learning to read strategically is related to children's cognitive development as well as to the social contexts of instruction. Some suggestions are offered for classroom instruction that can promote children's awareness and use of strategic reading. 相似文献

Students of six classes who had previously participated in a larger study of teaching styles were tested a year after completion of the course. The purpose of the follow-up was to determine whether or not the prior battery of tests, including a student evaluation of instructor form, the Introductory Psychology Criteria Test, an Attitude Toward Psychology Scale, and a knowledge test, administered in a large group setting independent of those used for grades by instructors, would be positively related to student performance on comparable tests given a year later. The follow-up measures included items from the above measures plus questions regarding experiences and readings related to psychology in the year since the students' introductory course and two brief experiments which the students were to critique. Results indicated that the end of the semester measures of teaching effectiveness in terms of student performance and attitudes were positively related to similar responses obtained a year later. 相似文献
