The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of rotavirus (RV) and soyabean trypsin inhibitor (TI) on lipid composition
and uptake of glucose and glycine in rotavirus (RV) infected malnourished (PEM) infant mice. Malnutrition was achieved in
animals by doubling the litter size. Cholesterol (Ch) and phospholipd (PL) contents, uptake levels of glucose and glycine
were determined in jejunum and ileum portion of small intestine. Increase in Ch/PL ratios was observed in PEM+RV group. The
levels became comparable in PEM+RV+TI as compared to PEM. Uptake levels of glucose and glycine increased in PEM animals. With
rotavirus (PEM+RV+TI group), the levels decreased which became comparable to PEM. Changes in uptake and lipid composition
with rotavirus and trypsin inhibitor may be responsible for altering membrane fluidity and organization during rotavirus diarrhea.
The results establish the importance of trypsin inhibitor during oral infection with rotavirus.

The purpose of this paper is to report the cross-sectional relationship between educational achievements and the ‘health status’ of the rural South African children in the Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS).The study followed a cohort design where 1033 children (569 boys and 464 girls) aged 7–14 were randomly sampled from 11 primary schools and one secondary school. Anthropometric measurements for height for age (HAZ), weight for age (WAZ), body mass index (BMI) and sum of skinfolds (SOS) were carried out to establish their ‘health status’. Educational achievement tests for Mathematics and English were administered to check their educational status. The results of the multilevel analysis showed that HAZ, WAZ and BMI were positively related to both English and Mathematics performance. HAZ was only positively related to mathematical performance and SOS was not related to educational achievement at all. Furthermore, age and gender only marginally influenced the observed relationships. The study recommends that other factors such as socio-economic status and learning environment should be looked into to find out whether these factors influence the observed relationships. 相似文献

The present study was aimed at assessing alterations in serum PCT in terms of its relation to body weight gain in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients undergoing treatment. Among patients (25–75 years) diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, those that were new smear positive, showed sputum conversion at the end of 2 months and were declared clinically cured at the end of 6 months, were included in the study (n = 40). Serum procalcitonin was determined by BRAHMS PCT-Q kit. Patients were divided into two study groups—Group 1 (n = 21; serum PCT > 2 ng/ml at diagnosis), Group 2 (n = 19; serum PCT > 10 ng/ml at diagnosis). Body weights of all patients were obtained at three different time points, PTB-0 (at diagnosis), PTB-2 (after 2 months of intensive treatment) and PTB-6 (after 6 months of treatment). In both groups, mean body weights at PTB-2 and PTB-6 were significantly higher than those at PTB-0 and at PTB-6 were significantly higher than those at PTB-2. However, percentage body weight gain following 2 months of intensive treatment was higher in group 1 (4.05 % gain, p < 0.01) than in group 2 (2.75 % body weight gain, p < 0.05). Thus, the percentage gain in group 1 was tending more towards the desirable minimum gain of 5 % during intensive phase. Increase in serum PCT levels in pulmonary tuberculosis is inversely associated with body weight gain during treatment. Thus, PCT could play a role in regulation of body weight gain in anorectic conditions like tuberculosis. 相似文献

Chronic kidney disease is becoming a major health problem globally and in India an alarming number of about 8 million people
are suffering from this disease. Patients undergoing hemodialysis have a high prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition and
inflammation. As these two conditions often occur concomitantly in hemodialysis patients, they have been referred together
as ‘malnutrition-inflammation-atherosclerosis syndrome’ to emphasize the important association with atherosclerotic cardiovascular
disease. The three factors related to the pathophysiology in these patients are dialysis related nutrient loss, increased
protein catabolism and hypoalbuminemia. Inflammation in Chronic Kidney disease is the most important factor in the genesis
of several complications in renal disease. Pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1 and TNF-alpha play a major role in the onset
of metabolic alterations in Chronic Kidney disease patients. Atherosclerosis is a very frequent complication in uremia due
to the coexistence of hypertension, hyperhomocysteinemia, inflammation, malnutrition and increased oxidative stress, generation
of advanced glycation end products, advanced oxidation protein products, hyperlipidemia and altered structural and functional
ability of HDL. LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein (A), apolipoprotein (B), and Lp(a) are also associated with atherosclerosis.
Studies have now provided enormous data to enable the evaluation of the severity of malnutrition-inflammation-atherosclerosis
syndrome as well as effective monitoring of these patients.
