ABSTRACT

Many events over the past decade have jeopardized the library's ability to fulfill its basic mission resulting in a shift of information delivery paradigms. Interlibrary loan, document delivery and resource sharing have become essential rather than peripheral and funding patterns are reflecting this philosophical shift. There is renewed interest in cooperative collection development and multiple options for meshing document delivery with an existing ILL program. Within this environment under a redefined mission statement, the Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks, addresses these shifting paradigms and has implemented a program to meet the information needs of its patrons.  相似文献

The Document Delivery Services/Interlibrary Loan Unit and the Course Reserves Unit at the University of California, San Diego's Access Services Department both utilize the Konica Minolta PS7000 book scanner to deliver requested documents and post electronic reserve items. Though the hardware is the same in both units, unique service goals and software—Ariel Interlibrary Loan Document Transmission Software for DDS/ILL and Adobe Photoshop for Course Reserves—result in different issues and challenges. This article discusses the shared practices of the Document Delivery Services/Interlibrary Loan and Course Reserves Units and how each unit utilizes the Konica Minolta PS7000 book scanner to offer better service for their patrons.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

No one can predict what document delivery will look like in the future, but librarians must guard patron confidentiality even in an electronic environment. This time it isn't an easily solved problem like finding another way of recording circulation than handwriting patron names onto circulation cards, it is instead the tracking of personal information attached to electronic text supplied by publishers that is a potential violator of patron privacy. Unmonitored in their efforts to protect their intellectual property without considering the rights of their customers, publishers could pose a threat to their customers' privacy, thus limiting their legal right of free access to information. Although encryption technology would appear to provide an answer to the confidentiality problem, it is not a panacea and that must be considered as the National Information Infrastructure is developed. Librarians need to stay alert to the developments in electronic publishing to be sure their concerns for patron privacy continue to be heard.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Describing her experience of establishing an Electronic Document Delivery Service at the library of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), the author discusses the various issues, which significantly effect the net cost, delivery time and management process of providing such a service by a library in Pakistan. While presenting multiple options leading to an effective solution, the advantages and disadvantages of each option have been highlighted, and their implications, with particular reference to Pakistani libraries, have been discussed. The various points to be considered by Pakistani Librarians, while selecting a commercial Document Provider, have also been discussed. In the end, the author discusses the potential of using the Electronic Document Delivery facility as a time-saving and cost-effective tool for Resource Sharing among libraries in Pakistan.  相似文献

Abstract

Interlibrary loan departments are frequently looking for methods to reduce turnaround time. The advent of electronic delivery in the past decade has greatly reduced turnaround time for articles, but recent developments in this arena have the potential to decrease turnaround time even further. The ILLiad interlibrary loan management system has an electronic delivery component entitled Odyssey. Odyssey has a setting that allows articles to be sent to patrons without borrowing staff intervention. Using the tracking data created by the ILLiad management system, the turnaround time data for two delivery methods, Ariel and Odyssey, was captured for two different academic institutions. With the Trusted Sender setting turned on, Odyssey delivery was faster than Ariel for the institutions studied.  相似文献

A brief review of hospital library reference problems is presented. The essential problem in a one-person medical library is the time factor or time constraint under which appropriate answer to reference questions must be delivered. Various other common reference problems such as emergencies, misunderstood requests, ethical considerations of priorities, and the choice of computerized data base versus manual searching are discussed as they relate to the small medical library. Some reference aids are suggested as they apply to specific problems in cancer chemotherapy, syndrome identification, and adverse effects of drugs. A sampling of quick reference sources is included.  相似文献
