AbstractThis article reports the results of a quantitative and systematic analysis comparing usage rates between English-language and French-language e-monograph titles at Laurentian University, Canada. Full-text viewings were collected as usage metrics. English-language e-monographs exhibited medium strength linear relationships between collection size and usage. On the other hand, French-language e-monographs exhibited weak linear relationships between collection size and usage. The French-language e-monograph collection experienced a higher rate of full-text use, relative to size. The cost-per-viewing ratio for the English-language e-monograph collection was higher than those that calculated for the French-language collection. 相似文献

ABSTRACTTo help students withstand the rising cost of textbooks and in turn support the mission of student success, the University of South Florida (USF) has implemented two electronic resources–based initiatives as part of the Tampa Library’s Textbook Affordability Project. Through the E-books for the Classroom program, the library purchases electronic versions of texts required for coursework, providing equitable access to needed materials at no cost to the students. For the past 5 years, this program has evolved into a highly successful textbook affordability measure, acquiring hundreds of e-books and serving thousands of students. Additionally, the library, with the support of the Office of the Provost and in collaboration with Innovative Education, is publishing a faculty-authored multimedia Open Access textbook to be used by hundreds of students each semester in USF’s children’s literature courses. The USF institutional repository, Scholar Commons, will host the textbook, making it freely available on a global scale. This program effectively uses library expertise and skills, coordinating university-wide faculty, professional, and technical resources, to create library-as-publisher for the benefit of the students and textbook affordability. 相似文献

The two major schemes for transliteration or roman- izalion of Chinese into English, Wade-Giles and Pinyin, are ex- amined. The conclusion is that bolh methods are about equally effec- tive. AbstractResearch has shown the value of reading for school children. In South Africa most pupils study through the medium of a second language and their language competence would benefit from wide reading. Teachers should serve as role models to encourage pupils to read, but many are unqualified or underqualified and lack a knowledge of children's books. Often their initial teacher education does not provide them with the necessary knowledge or media to make their classroom presentations more stimulating. Shell Education Service developed the Holdall Lectern and Prompt Posters which provide teachers with compact, flexible media which they can adapt to suit their own needs. The media can be used immediately and teachers' confidence is increased. Pupils learn better and are introduced to a wider variety of popular books. The Holdall Lectern and Prompt Posters have been used successfully for both formal and non-formal education. 相似文献

ABSTRACTAcademic libraries provide intellectual access (discovery and procurement) to the full text of electronic journal articles through traditional library technologies like discovery layers, link resolver software and knowledge bases. These technologies mainly rely on accurate title-level metadata to successfully deliver journal articles to library users. Open Access articles pose a difficulty for many participants in the e-journal supply chain, including libraries and publishers, as Open Access status is a property of the article, not the title. A review of the literature examines: the impact of Open Access on intellectual access through traditional library technologies, current proposed solutions, and emerging technologies. 相似文献
