This study concerns the overlap between author-supplied keywords and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) bibliographic records in the library catalog. The article provides a discussion on uniqueness, matching, and complementariness based on a replication of Strader's methodology and rubric from a 2009 article. Findings support most of Strader's conclusions, including the complementary nature of keywords and controlled vocabularies. Both keywords and LCSH provide unique terms that enhance access. Researchers also broke new ground regarding partial matching, particularly within LCSH. The fact that uniqueness matters has implications for the continued use of LCSH, for LCSH maintenance, and for further research.  相似文献

A study of the attitude of students towards the Use of Library course which involves library orientation/bibliographic instruction and user education was conducted during the 1988/89 academic session. Use of Library is one of the courses taught in the general studies programme which has been going at Bendel State University for 4 years. The object of the study was to test whether students liked the Use of Library course, whether they found it useful, whether it should continue to be compulsory or be made optional, and the impact of the programme. The result of the study is highly positive. The respondents found the course very useful both in academic work and in social life. The respondents were ambivalent as to whether the course should continue to be compulsory or be made optional. The administration of the programme is delineated. Suggestions are made for the improvement of the course.  相似文献

Kent State University Libraries’ electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) cataloging process features contributions by authors, by the ETDcat application, and by catalogers. Who is doing what, and how much of it is findable in the library catalog? An empirical analysis is performed featuring simple frequencies within the KentLINK catalog, articulated by the use of a newly devised rubric. The researchers sought the degree to which the ETD authors, the applications, and the catalogers can supply accurate, findable metadata. Further development of combinatory cataloging processes is suggested. The method of examining the data and the rubric are provided as a framework for other metadata analysis.  相似文献

This paper presents a case study of a group of Chinese ESL learners in China, who study English by immersing themselves regularly and rigorously in English television drama. A self-directed learning pedagogy has been developed and discussed, which seems to have signposted an effective and economic way for ESL learners to improve linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competence beyond the language classroom.  相似文献
