Abstract:Temple-hosted learning is a combination of a Confucian Temple and a school. It developed from the Han Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty, and achieved rapid progress under the guidance of the “Chongwen” policy in the Song Dynasties. This study reviewed the literature to identify the fact that the early Song Dynasty set up schools next to temples; temples and schools were built together in the middle and late Northern Song Dynasty; and some of the academies were even transformed to “temple learning”, thus making temples and schools form a community of enlightenment and destiny. A temple was able to educate the public with the influence of a school nearby, becoming an integration of political rule, governance, Taoism and education, and exerting a profound impact on the temple activities of the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties
Keywords:Song Dynasties  temple-hosted learning  confucian temple  local official studies  social education
