| Abstract: | The present paper focuses its attention on the hedging function of the modal verb CAN in verbal interaction.After the analysis of the collected data in English it is found that modal verb CAN can make words more polite,more expressive and more relevant.Such a study from a micro perspective might be helpful to get a better understanding of the hedging function of such modal verbs as CAN in different contexts and use them appropriately in actual verbal communications. |
