Abstract:Blast transformation of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients and normal controls was examined to assess the cell mediated immune response of these patients. Uptake of3H-thymidine by PBL of DCM patients incubated for 72 hrs with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) was 17787±9513 CPM and without PHA was 1475±529 CPM showing a stimulation index (SI) by PHA of 12.95±6.35. The corresponding values in healthy controls were 55078±12282 and 1868±792 respectively with a SI of 38.0±26.0. Blast transformation of PBL by PHA was significantly suppressed in DCM patients as compared to normal controls. This suppression was found to be highly significant and possibly indicates the defective cell medicated immune response in DCM patients.
