| Abstract: | Shangshi -a novel by Lu Xun, an indignant, mournful love story, is full of many, many profound implications and leaves much room for readers to explore from a variety of perspectives. The author, by using the form of ＂Juansheng＇ s letter＂, depicts the process of the love-beginning and ending between Juansheng and Zijun from a unique point of view. This is a tragedy resulting from hero and heroine＇s character flaw. Juansheng, the hero who is selfish, mean, timid and ran away when facing the danger of the disaster, can＇ t be responsible for himself. While Zijun, the heroine, sticking to the idea of love-supremacy, at the same time, influenced deeply by feudal thought, returns to the old way of ordinary women to depend entirely on their husband for living and shows the character of being servile, after she gained ＂surface marital independence＂. The combination of the hero＇ s selfishness, meanness and timidness with the heroine＇ s servile loyalty leads to the tragical result of the story. |
