Competence and the New Paradigm: |
| |
Abstract: | In today's rapidly changing world, it is imperative that reference librarians remain current in their knowledge of the evolving information industry and the strategies with which needed information can be identified and accessed. In order to maintain professional competence and currency, librarians need to engage in frequent, appropriate continuing professional education. In some states, certification and censure are either in place or under discussion in an attempt to mandate participation in continuing education. It is important to recognized that the profession has entered into a new paradigm and, as the twenty-first century approaches, the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to remain a significant "player" in the information industry will require continual updating. |
