Abstract: | Much of the current attack on the system of scholarly publication focuses on the issue of who should own copyright: authors,
publishers, universities, or professional societies. Dissatisfaction with publishers' performance has grown out of publishers'
failures to communicate the value and complexity of what they do, and to confront the need for change created by electronic
technologies. The author argues that, despite the challenges of technology, the current copyright system is both sound and
equitable. |
