| Abstract: | Nathaniel Hawthorne is a representative author in American romantic period.In his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter he has depicted an impressive character,Pearl,who plays an important role in the delineation of the multiple characters of the heroine—Hester and the rich meaning of the work.Through the analysis of Pearl’s multiple identities,this thesis tries to discuss the function of her identities in the depiction of Hester and in the expression of the multiple messages in this classic literary work. |
