| Abstract: | Meng Jinghui, arguably most productive director in China now, came to Hangzhou again early August 2013. He came to attend a press conference on August 11 to usher in the upcolning 2013 Hangzhou International Theater Festival. He said at the press event that he was overjoyed to be part of the beau tiful thing in the beautiful city. He is open with his passion for Hangzhou and theater. Meng indeed plays a big part in this theater gala from September 16 to 30. As initiator and art supervisor of the event, he is instrumental in bringing 9 major plays to be staged by troupes domestic and overseas. 1 dialed his cell phone number and found he was in Avignon participating in Avignon Theater Festival in south France. The back ground noise allowed me to imagin the fes tivities of the event. The interview on phone was brief and to the point. Meng said, ＂We aim to stage new works and recreate classics that allow new interpretations. We aim to promote Hangzhou as a capital of culture and enhance its stares.＂ To my surprise, Meng did not choose his To Live, adapted from Yu Hua＇s novel, to be the piece to launch the festival in Hangzhou. |
