Abstract:This paper describes the experience of a measurement methodologist as he underwent the training to work as a part-time reader in a high stakes assessment of writing samples from a statewide competency-testing program for ninth graders. The paper provides fictional and stereotypical examples of writing samples for each score point, and discusses the involvement of personality in the process of writing assessment. In addition, the paper makes the case for the support of middle and high school teachers as part-time readers as part of a process to augment the professional understanding of high stakes assessment in the public schools. The paper concludes with suggestions for further research into the mechanisms by which readers engage assessment rubrics.
