| 摘 要： | 复旦主编的《大学英语》第三册第二单元The Wom-an Who Would Not Tell一文中有这样两个句子: 1.It was like walking into a nightmare: those awfulbandages that dreadful smell. 2. Then she went out into the cool air and leaned a-gainst the house, trying not to be sick as she thought of whatshe had seen-that smashed right hand, that missing left leg. 以上两句中都重复使用了that(those),虽然这里除了that(those)固有的指称功能外,不难看出故事的讲述者Bettie Van Meter在事发六十年后对当时的可怖情景记忆犹新。That(those)与其它修饰词一起表现出强烈的个人情感,再加上修辞手段的恰当运用更增强了这
