| Abstract: | The paper treats the indexes that western missionaries compiled in Shanghai,qualified people trained by Shanghai Missionary Universities,earliest Index Committee set up in Shanghai,Shanghai as a center where indexing system for Chinese characters came into being and were discussed,index publications in Shanghai from 1911-1949 years etc.In the end,points out that Shanghai is the important place that modern Chinese index originated. |
