| Abstract: | Scholars in Chinese ancient times varied in their v iewpoints about the formulae of awarding surnames in the Zhou Dynasty. The prese nt investigation reveals, however, that the then formulae of awarding surnames o ught to be classified largely into ten subclasses, including the surnames awarde d according to the kingdom, the realm, the style, the official position, the nam e, the dwelling place, the conferred title, the rank or the two character surna me. Meanwhile, the origins of and applied rules for the different formulae of awa rding surnames in the Zhou Dynasty have been re investigated and some erroneous view of the predecessors have been corrected in the investigation. |
