Abstract:As one group of the most widely used oral antibacterial drugs, macrolides have been clinically applied for more than 50 years because of their safety and efficacy. Recently, the non-antibacterial applications of macrolides are frequently reported, such as the therapy of malignant tumor, exudative pleurisy, pulmonary fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, bronchiectasis, asthma, gastrointestinal peristalsis disorders, and so on with new pharmacological effects, including reverse of tumor resistance, anti-chemical adherence, anti-fibrosis, and modulations of gastrointestinal motility as well as immune activity. The in-depth research of marcolides' non-antibiotic actions can not only extend the application fields of macrolides, but provide a new way to treat some refractory diseases.
