Abstract:The structures of fractal patterns originated from the surface di-electric breakdown on the aluminium foil irradiated in vacuum by an intense relativistic electron beams have been found. There are two kinds of the fractal patterns: symmetrical pattern and unsymmetrical pattern.Experimental results show that the average fractal dimension is Dsym.=1.71 for the symmetrical fractal and Dunsym.=1.40 for the unsymmetrical fractal under regarding the thickness of the fractal pattern as zero; And Dsym=1.47 and Dunsym.=1.20 when taking account of the thickness of the fractal branches. The formation of these fractals is due to the surface dicharging induced by the accumulated charge on the Al2O3 surface di-electrical layer of the foil. When the potential distribution of the accumulated charge was not affected by the potential of other accumulated charge or the main current pulse, the symmetrical fractal pattern would be produced, unsymmetrical otherwise. Our experimental results confirm the DBM(Dielectric Breakdown Model), ie, DBM can discribe dielectric breakdown on the solid surface as well as in the dielectric gas.
