Abstract: | In developing reform materials, textbook publishers cannot create either a need for or receptivity to change. Rather, they
must assess readiness for change and create materials that meet existing needs. This article analyzes the climate for change
that was created in the 1980s and its impact on the demand for new social studies materials. Houghton Mifflin’s creation of
a new K-8 series is described, along with the reception it received in California and elsewhere. |
