| Abstract: | Surface and Deep Structure are two concepts raised by American linguist Norm Chomsky, and are an important part of the theory of Transformational Generative Grammar. Surface Structure stands for the linear formation of sentences, while Deep Structure expresses the deep meaning of the surface formation. Therefore, what is the effect brought about by the two kinds of structures on the transla- tion from English to Chinese？ The author takes a probe in this regard in the following three aspects： emphasis, beauty in form, ambiguity. |
