摘    要:AVHRR是1981年~2000年间主要的全球对地观测数据集,也是正在开发的跨传感器(AVHRR-MODIS-VIIRS)长期数据集的重要组成部分。由于AVHRR数据来自多个NOAA卫星,最初是为气象预报设计的,因此在利用AVHRR进行陆地生态系统研究时,虽然取得了最初设计AVHRR时所没有预料到的成绩,但是也不断遇到一些问题。对这些问题的不同处理,就形成了很多AVHRR数据集。本文从数据完整性、时空分辨率、地图投影、文件格式、传感器标定、卫星漂移校正、云检测、大气校正、数据构成与质量标记等方面,比较了3个主要的AVHRR数据集(PAL,GIMMS,LTDR)的特征。这些特征对重新评估基于各种AVHRR数据集研究报告的可靠性,合理使用不同AVHRR数据进行陆地生态系统长期变化研究,具有一定的参考意义。

Abstract:AVHRR is the only source of remotely sensed data that includes continuous global cover for 1981-2000, and is the major component of the Long Term Data Record (LTDR) data sets consisting of AVHRR-MODIS-VIIRS. However, since AVHRR was originally designed for climate research, its use in earth science faces various problems. Many efforts have been made to resolve these problems since the early 1980s, and as a result there are several different AVHRR data sets. This paper compares three widely used AVHRR data sets (PAL, GIMMS, and LTDR) in terms of data completeness, spatial and temporal resolution, map projection, file format, sensor calibration, satellite orbital drift correction, cloud detection, atmospheric correction, data content, and quality assessment. There are two versions for PAL: ALP I and ALP II, which have slightly different algorithms but two common aspects - there is little or no correction for effects from aerosols, no correction for effects from two volcano eruptions, and no correction for trans-satellite variation. That means PAL time series may suffer from periodic variation resulting from trans-satellite inconsistency, and also may suffer from spatial inconsistency for some regions after major volcano eruptions. GIMMS data sets have more coverage than PAL, spatially and temporally. It has only NDVI, and was improved by correcting for effects of satellite orbital drift and volcanic eruptions, but no atmospheric correction was conducted. There are two versions of GIMMS, but these differ mainly in map projection and file format rather than data quality. LTDR is an on-going project, and its objective is to develop a long term data record using AVHRR, MODIS, and VIIRS. According to the plan, AVHRR will be reprocessed using a MODIS-like algorithm, and a MODIS-comparable product will be developed. It can be concluded from the analysis that it is reasonable to review certain AVHRR-based literatures with up-to-date knowledge, and each AVHRR data set should be applied within its limitations.
