Online Database Use in Psychology
Abstract:This current survey examines the status of multidatabase use by reference personnel responsible for online searching in academic libraries. The study surveyed 200 college and university libraries in the United States with a graduate program in psychology. The results indicate that 90% of database searchers do not restrict their online searches of psychological topics to PsycINFO. Some of the databases that were identified as adjuncts in performing a multidatabase strategy were: ERIC, MEDLINE, SOCIAL SCISEARCH and SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS. A few respondents indicated using multi-file options such as DIALOG'S DIALINDEX. The current findings suggest that online searchers need to be cognizant of the advantages of multidatabase searching in a designated discipline, and should inform end-users of the availability of such comprehensive search options.
