| Abstract: | Collected in this article are 180 non-standard characters in common use from the works on Fuzhou dialect by western missionaries in the 19 th Century.By referring to the pronunciation and meaning of the colloquial words for which these characters were written,the writer discusses the principles underlying their devisal and usage. |
