Abstract:This paper takes an eco-critical approach to Hemingway's Big Two-Hearted River. The protagonist Nick Adam regained mental balance through controlling nature. To Nick, nature was only an object that must be controlled and ruled.Controlling and ruling nature became a reflection of Nick's competence and a resource of his happiness.Because of the influence of Christianity,Hemingway materialized nature, regarding nature as a tool of fulfilling human being's spiritual demands and that of curing human being's mental imbalance.
Keywords:Big two-Hearted river  Eco-criticism  Religious roots  Materialized nature
