Abstract:Exposure to altitude has specific biological effects on humans and could diliver certain physiological responses, such as the production of erythropoietin (EPO), which triggers an increase in red cell mass and Hb concentration. This hematological acclimatization response facilitates the restoration of normal blood O2 content and improves tissue oxygenation. Continuous residence at moderate heights (over2,000-2,500 m) improves the oxygen transport capacity by an erythropoietin - induced increase in the hematocrit. An increase in the hemoglobin concentration has been shown to augment maximal O2 consumption (VQ2 max) and to enhance exercise performance.
Keywords:EPO  HIF- 1  altitude  exercise of hypoxia
