Abstract: | Objective: This investigation aims to explore the accuracy and reliability of pedometers placed in different positions on the body (wrist, waist, and in-shoe) during walking, running and stair walking. Methods: Twenty healthy adults were required to walk and run the 400 m around the outdoor track, and continuous ascended and descended 17 short flights of stairs for ten times at a consistent self-selected speed. All the steps were recorded by the pedometers and video (gold standard). This procedure was repeated at the same time one week later without a video record. Results: Waist- (p < .05) and in-shoe-worn (p < .05) pedometer''s accuracy was significantly higher than wrist-worn during walking, and in-shoe-worn higher accuracy than wrist-worn both running (p < .05) and stair walking (p < .05). The MAPE of the pedometers placed on the waist and in-shoe were small MAPE (<3) during all locomotion. The intramodel reliability was exceptionally high (>0.80) when wearing all positions during walking and running. Conclusions: The pedometer''s position does impact the accuracy of step count for running and stair walking. The in-shoe-worn might an accurate and reliable way to assess physical activity in daily life. |
