Abstract:East Zhcjiang Canal, the southern part of the Grand Canal of China, crosses Hangzhou. Shaoxing and Ningbo in the east of Zhejiang Province. In ancient times, the canal was a golden trade channel. The canal comprises sections of Yong River and Yao River, which are natural, and a manmade section of 80 kilometers. The earliest canal in the south of the Qiantang River in the east of Zhejiang was constructed in the last decades of the Spring and Autumn. The 20 km manmade river connected Shaoxing City with Cao'e River. It is said that East Zhejiang Canal is an extension of the Grand Canal of China and that it is much older than the Grand Canal in the north. The Grand Canal of China runs all the way to reach Gongchen Bridge in Hangzhou. Then it crosses Qiantang River to reach Xix ing Town in the presentday Binjiang District of Hangzhou. It is here that the Grand Canal enters tile East Zhejiang river system. The canal goes all the way to Ningbo and empties into the sea, the whole canal in this part of the province measuring 239 kilometers. Histori cally, East Zhejiang Canal gradually merged with BeijingHangzhou Grand Canal and be came an important part of the Grand Canal. The canal has cultivated many river towns and cities. Xixing Town is the departure point of the East Zhejiang Canal. There were 72.5 transshipment firms situated at the town. These firms employed a total of thousands of people who transported goods manually or using transport means. Xixing was the logistic center in this part of Zhejiang for centuries. There arc ruins of queys where goods got transferred between ships and land transport means. Ancient towpath in the Shaoxing section of the East Zhejiang Canal is an important item for applying for world heritage status for the Grand Canal of China. This section in Shaoxing County measures 24.3 kilometers. There are 138 cultural sites closely associ ated with the ancient towpath. The original towpath was about 75 kilometers initially constructed in the Tang Dynasty. Nowadays, only sections of the ancient towpath remain. Shaoxing County has carried out an unprec edented improvement project to get the an cient structure refurbished.
