英语发展过程中,英语吸收了大量了外来词,特别是希腊词,拉丁词。有的外来词通过演变成了现代英语中的词缀,如表示数目的前缀。英语中数目前缀数量多,它们与其它词如名词,形容词等组合构成数以万计的词汇。从词源看,表数目的前缀主要来自拉丁语和希腊语。从构成的词汇看,多数是科技词汇,涉及数学、物理、化学、生物、医学等以及计量单位。 相似文献

拉丁借词曾对古英语产生过重大影响。文章主要论述其影响的三个时期：零时期（通过日尔曼部落借人拉丁词）、第一时期（通过凯尔特人借入拉丁词）和第二时期（因为皈依基督教而借入拉丁词）。其中第二时期的影响最大,这与英国人皈依罗马基督教有很大关系。在这一时期,拉丁借词不仅影响古英语的词汇,而且间接地促进了古英语文学的诞生。 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which study of Latin might influence high school students' improvement in spelling. Skilled and less skilled spellers who chose to study Latin or other second languages in ninth-grade were given a standardized and an experimental spelling test, which allowed for a comparison of their spelling of words of Latin and Greek origin, both in the fall of their ninth-grade and the spring of their eleventh-grade year. While skilled spellers generally made greater progress than less skilled spellers, the students of Latin did not outperform students of other second languages either on the standardized spelling test or specifically on words of Latin origin. Analysis of errors on the experimental test indicated that certain words of Latin origin were misspelled as frequently by eleventh as by ninth graders; these may have affected the lower rate of improvement on words of Latin origin, in contrast to the words of Greek origin. The results suggest particular ways in which the relationship of spelling proficiency and study of language might be investigated further. 相似文献

Cognates are words that are the same or nearly the same orthographically and semantically in English and Spanish. The majority of the more than 20,000 cognates are academic vocabulary words comprised of Latin and Greek roots and affixes. Several thousand cognates can be found in the picture books that have earned the Américas Book Award, which was established to honor quality multicultural books that portray Latino cultures in a positive light. Although chemistry impacts largely on the society and civilization, the subject is still viewed with awe. This is because
the language of chemistry of which the technical terms are an integral component, is not easily comprehensible even for the
practicing scientists; let alone the layman. However, many of these terms, in English, can be noted as derived from a few
affixes of Greek and Latin origin, e.g., ortho, tropo, mer, meta, iso, para, hetero, syn, homo, topo, dia and pseudo. Identifying
the roots from which a term is formed can help understand it better, and even predict what a new term to be encountered stands

Commonly used technical anatomy and physiology (A&P) terms are predominantly rooted in Latin and Greek vocabulary, so it is commonly inferred that a solid grounding in Latin and Greek roots of medical terminology will improve student learning in anatomy and related disciplines. This study examines the association of etymological knowledge of A&P terms and A&P course performance among 446 undergraduates in their first semester of the study of human gross anatomy and physiology, with a more detailed analysis of the characteristics of 52 students who filled out surveys about their prior knowledge and experiences related to medicine or anatomy. In both data sets, there was only a weak positive correlation between the performance on a quiz of Latin and Greek medical terms and the students' performance on regular assignments. The presumption that familiarity with Latin and Greek word roots has a strong influence on successful learning of anatomy is not supported by these data. Future research should address whether or not there are particular skills associated with using etymological knowledge in improving A&P course performance. 相似文献
