This study examines how communication related anxieties are related to individuals' use of computer mediated communication (CMC). 225 respondents were given the PRCA‐24, WAT, and RAT tests. They were also given a measure of computer anxiety. Respondents were then asked to indicate the extent to which they used e‐mail, interactive messaging, or web browsers. The results indicate that there is no relationship between communication anxieties and CMC use. Computer anxiety appears to be the main predictor of e‐mail, chat, and web use.  相似文献

Summary

Academic libraries now provide reference service for the remote user in at least two ways: by the telephone and by electronic mail. The remote user at a computer workstation, however, may not have access to a telephone and may be poorly served by the asynchronous nature of electronic mail. New technologies and collaborative software for serving remote users in real-time such as Internet chat, paging and instant messaging, whiteboard, application sharing, and audio and video conferencing offer new possibilities for remote access to reference services. In this article we review these technologies and report the results of a trial project at Temple University. The results are promising for real-time reference services.  相似文献

Significant differences are reported in the use of the personal pronouns — “I”, “WE”, “YOU”, and “THEY” — in the electronic mail sent among members within an organization, and the mail sent into the organization from other offices. The Medical Library Center of New York, a cooperative library agency for the health sciences, developed a program to offer an electronic communications system (LIFENET) with access to the Internet for its members. Information on documentation and training as well as statistics on the subsequent use of the system and of the Internet are discussed in the article. Specific examples of how health science librarians are using the system include bibliographic verification, reference, research on integrated library systems, production of duplicate journal lists, and professional activities such as electronic mail and discussion groups (listservs).  相似文献

Summary

The promising future of new and better information services supported by the use of information technologies is well documented. Many journal articles describe successful experiences with better reference and instructional services, new services to new kinds of students who are engaged in distant independent learning or other non-traditional education, and better communication with library users. However, there are many perils on the way to delivering such improvements with the use of new finding tools, new software, new printing systems, and new telecommunication networks. An administrative overview of the sorts of planning which can smooth the implementation of information technology-based reference and instructional services outlines options for staffing, troubleshooting, fund raising, and budget development. Planning takes time and effort, collaboration and creativity. With appropriate emphasis on planning, the promise of implementing improvements in quality of services through information technologies can and should become a reality.  相似文献

信息安全是电子档案管理的重要内容。作者在分析国内外运用区块链及相关技术建设电子档案管理系统研究与实践的基础上,提出“联盟+公有”双区块链结构的电子档案安全管理系统,即以一条联盟区块链记录电子档案管理信息,另一条公有区块链记录电子档案使用信息。本文首先介绍了系统架构,该系统不仅可解决一个机构内的电子档案管理和使用中的信息安全问题,而且具有可拓展性,可以整合不同组织间相互隔离的信息系统,提供可靠的电子档案管理平台;其次以该系统在暨南大学的实现和应用论证了系统的适用和可行,并从数据安全性、操作回溯性、可验证性、保密性等几个方面对系统进行了评估。希望该系统的建立能够为数字档案馆和电子档案管理平台建设提供案例参考和有益启发。  相似文献

Research on computer-mediated communication (CMC) has thus far largely overlooked instant messaging (IM), an extremely popular, and increasingly important, form of CMC. This study examines the most prevalent motivations for using IM within what is currently among the largest demographic groups utilizing this tool, college students. Data from 271 students are used to assess current motivations for IM use, its relative (dis)advantages over other communication channels, and its potential displacement of other technologies. Findings indicate that IM usage parallels factors found in other research, although important differences emerge within cross-media comparisons. In addition, respondents exhibited a high capacity for multi-tasking in IM conversations, and results suggest displacement effects, particularly of email by IM. Overall, results of this study shed considerable light on the use of IM among those users who will become increasingly important over time for understanding IM use in the contemporary media environment.  相似文献

Background: Internet‐based applications, in particular those that allow communication, have great potential to meet information needs. Limited research has indicated that people with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS; PHAs) use these technologies, but it has not yet been examined how resources are used collaboratively and in conjunction with offline sources. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine in what ways PHAs collaborate to meet treatment information needs and what role Internet‐based computer‐mediated communication (CMC) played in meeting this goal. Methods: This exploratory study was implemented using surveys and focus groups with 23 participants in Toronto, Canada. The purposive sample included men and women. Results: A variety of both off‐ and online resources were used to learn about HIV/AIDS treatment information, including web‐based and print. All participants were communicating with others, primarily in person, and most desired anecdotal treatment information. However, few reported using CMC to accomplish this goal. Harris and Dewdney's Principles of Information Seeking was used to frame the findings. Conclusions: Despite technical proficiency with CMC, few participants in this study reported use of this communication tool. Information professionals need to ensure access to HIV health information including those in remote areas who have fewer resources.  相似文献

The continuing desktop computing revolution, major re‐design and re‐implementation by a number of vendors of integrated library systems, widespread public acceptance and use of the Internet/World‐Wide Web, and the increasing use of the Internet to deliver digital content and access to electronic resources, have all combined to create the need for libraries in the United States to enhance and replace existing systems, networks, and other technologies and to implement new technologies. Libraries planning new network‐centric services face the prospect of overall technology enhancement to optimise service delivery; technology support and staff training and development become critical for successful implementation. Electronic records of government organizations are becoming increasingly important for accountability. Managing electronic records, however, proves to be difficult since information and communication technologies confront organizations with various opportunities and risks. In this paper the findings of an international expert survey on electronic records management are presented. These findings identify opportunities and risks for e-mail systems, database management systems, office systems, web technology systems and smart systems. 随着社会信息化和电子文件管理进程,我国推行多年的纸质、电子双套制文档管理的不适应性日益显现,相关政策和局部实践开始进行单轨制探索试点,但在认知、政策、行动上还有不少局限。推行单轨制是实现电子文件管理目标、助力信息化效能和降低成本的保障,从纸质管理平台转移到数字平台需要法律、政策和管理三大支点。目前我国亟需制定宏观政策与战略框架,全面部署电子文件管理与长期保存系统,培育理论、技术、方法和专业人才,最重要的是观念转换。  相似文献

This study explored the household use of electronic mail. In a telephone probability sample of 881 adults, 112 adults reported they used electronic mail. This sample provided four superordinate reasons for home e‐mail use: interpersonal relationships; personal gain; business; and gratification opportunities. Overwhelmingly, home e‐mail was reported to be used for interpersonal relationship reasons regardless of user demographics. The findings suggest that e‐mail is used for the maintenance of interpersonal relationships and that gratification opportunities play an important role in home e‐mail use.  相似文献

Libraries have experienced a great deal of change in communication networks and information technology. The Iranian academic libraries, like other libraries, attempted to adopt the new information technology. It should be realized that although new information technologies and electronic resources are collected on a large scale by academic libraries they are not always used in the same scale. There are some factors, which affect the rate of adoption of each new technology. Rogers in his theory introduced these factors in five categories as relative advantage, observability, trial- ability, complexity and compatibility. This paper investigates the effects of different features of electronic reference materials on the rate of their adoption. Results show that the most effective factors in adoption of electronic reference materials are the ability of electronic reference materials to facilitate information retrieval, shortening the time of searching and fair cost of resources. In addition, it seems that the most problematic factors, which slow down the adoption of electronic reference materials, stem from unfamiliarity of academic librarians and users with computers and searching of databases.  相似文献
