Academic libraries face an uncertain future. Rather than attempting to develop libraries based on an unknowable future, the author argues it is preferable to address student learning needs with a set of information and learning instructional services established on teaching and learning principles and activities. Evolving from and replacing the present academic library, this new organization, the information and learning center, is staffed by a new academic professional, the information and learning specialist, who addresses the student's need to gather and manage information, read, and write as an integrated set of experiences directed by the curriculum and teachers’ pedagogies.  相似文献

Mobile Internet applications and service innovations are changing people's way of life. At the same time, they are also changing the way that people communicate and access information. People who visited libraries to find specific information in the past are now able to find the same information online. As the spectrum of human need grows, the opportunities for librarians to meet these needs are also growing. Libraries will need to be designed to accommodate the changing needs of their users. Mobile library services can meet users' information needs in a fast-paced society. In this investigation we identified 39 university libraries supported by the Ministry of Education's “Project 985” and evaluated their status as mobile library service providers.  相似文献

The number of migrant farmer workers in China has increased so rapidly that they can't be ignored anymore as a vulnerable group in the coming information society. This study formulates a theoretical framework on the process of seeking for government information online and employs a method of questionnaire survey to investigate the information needs of migrant farmer workers and their behavior of using e-government service. The findings drawn include inconsistency of information seeking behaviors with information needs, and conditions of transfer from potential users of e-government services to actual users, such as information literacy, IT environment, the influence of social networks, the operations of government websites, and targeted services. Several policy recommendations are presented based on these findings, including improvements in the workers' information capacity, construction of special e-government programs aimed at such workers, and enhancement of public library systems and government service offerings to this target group.  相似文献

Until very recently, Russian libraries attached to museums have not envisioned the general public as potential users, but rather have focused on the information needs of museum staff and special researchers. In this article, the author analyzes some of the results of a research project that examined information expectations and needs of actual and potential visitors to the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the visitors' sources for obtaining museum information, their perceived gaps in such information, and the implications of these issues for the services, operations, and “image” of the museums' library. Public libraries have the potential to provide rich information support for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Librarians who understand the complex information gaps and barriers that IPV survivors confront during repeated attempts to achieve safety can create more effective services and policies. This study examines an IPV online support network's postings during ten months. The content analysis of the postings correlates survivors' expressed information needs, barriers, and resource preferences during the three basic stages of crisis. As funding for crisis centers disappears and IPV survivor needs increase, librarians can help to save lives by adjusting services to enhance privacy, safety, and confidentiality.  相似文献

Special academic libraries are in the unique position to blend the innovative and user focused services of academic libraries with the niche collections of special libraries when serving their Millennial student population. Millennials are a highly researched generation, but special libraries may have not updated their services to reflect the needs and expectations of this rising generation. Undergraduates need relevant information while faculty and graduate students need the right information. These needs are quite different and imply special considerations in library services. Undergraduates are not well served in libraries that aim their services primarily to the needs of researchers. Libraries serving undergraduates should have an easily accessible basic collection of popular periodicals keyed to general indexes with reference help nearby. Undergraduates should also be offered library instruction when they are working on a library research project. The Earlham College model of faculty-librarian cooperation and the term paper consultation are ideal in that they blend reference service and library instruction.  相似文献

��[Purpose/significance] In view of the differences between China and western developed countries in social system, social culture, economic development level, etc., this paper compares the different characteristics of the special services of public libraries in China and abroad, and provides reference for the development of the special services of public libraries in China.[Method/process] Based on the investigation of the status of the special services of public libraries in China and abroad, this paper respectively identified the main types of special services of Chinese and foreign public libraries through cluster analysis and conducted comparative analysis to reveal the commonalities and differences.[Result/conclusion] Comparing the characteristics of the special services of Chinese and foreign public libraries, this paper finds that the academic content of the special service of Chinese public libraries need to be improved, and the training of library professionals needs to be strengthened, and further attention needs to be paid to the interaction between libraries and their users in service process, so as to improve the attraction and influence of the special services of the public library.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对我国与西方发达国家在社会制度、社会文化、经济发展水平等方面存在的差异,对比国内外公共图书馆特色服务的不同特点,为我国公共图书馆特色服务的发展提供参考。[方法/过程] 在对国内外公共图书馆特色服务现状展开调查的基础上,通过聚类分析识别中外公共图书馆特色服务的主要类型并展开对比分析,揭示其中的共性和差异。[结果/结论] 对比中外公共图书馆特色服务的特点发现,我国公共图书馆特色服务内容的学术性有待提高,图书馆专业人才的培养还需要不断加强,应当进一步重视在服务过程中图书馆与用户之间的交互,以此来不断提升公共图书馆特色服务的吸引力和影响力。  相似文献

Our society is becoming more and more culturally and ethnically diverse. It is imoortant that libraries respond to this fact by reflecting diversity in both their collections and services. In order to do so, reference librarians must understand other cultures, be aware of the information needs and information seeking behavior of patrons wilh multicultural backgrounds. Through a literature review, some characteristics of multiethnic groups in the information seeking process are summarized. Barriers to effective communication in the iibraries include language, conceptual awareness of library services, and philosophy of education. Among ethnic groups, informal social networks and gatekeepers play a crucial role in seeking information. Guidelines are suggested to achieve effective communication with patrons for whom English is a second language. Recommendations are also made for meeting the goals of diversity in reference service. Important topics discussed are: effective communication, special program development, needs assessments and outreach, and training and recruitment.  相似文献
