Data on serials resources in Canadian libraries are presented for the period of the three years 1981-1983. The growth of serials collections in 42 university libraries is examined, indicating uneven increases in various regions. Only Ontario university libraries recorded substantial and continued growth. These data are compared with the serial resources of the National Library and the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information, which both provide nation-wide lending services. The state of serials collections in selected college and public libraries is also presented.  相似文献

Newspapers in university libraries have never fared well as a basic information resource. They are used rather to supplement an enlightened patron's daily dose of gossip. It is the writer's contention that newspapers provide more than this. They popularize knowledge and make it more accessible. They are important to research, fundamental to language and area studies as well as to scientific, legal and historical study. They are documents of history. The result of this survey is organized in five parts: controlling, delivery of services, development, size and methods of handling, and display. The findings indicate that newspapers are treated as serials and receive handling similar to that of serials. It also reveals one of the great distinctions libraries make between serials and newspapers: newspapers for the most part are not classified and therefore have not been fully integrated into the service provisions of the library. Therefore the university libraries' newspaper collections should be organized for maximum use.  相似文献

Librarians are often fond of proclaiming that they are developing digital libraries. The clear evidence however is that the better strategy is to design services to “deliver digitally.” A brief overview of current, past, and future publishing trends will reveal data key to any understanding of evolving policies for preservation of a nation's intellectual output. These data highlight that academic libraries, at least, are presenting homogeneous collections of digital serials. Together with the budget pressures to maintain serial collections, the result is a lack of collecting diversity of the intellectual publishing of interest to academe. Presently, academic libraries in Australia are committing between 30% and 40% of their acquisitions budgets to digital resources. Yet, this cannot buy more than 10% of the published serials output. The availability of serial information will become more and more constrained in the very near future as the range of print serial titles shrinks in accordance with institutional buying power.CAVAL Collaborative Solutions is a consortium of Victorian university libraries and the State Library of Victoria. Established 25 years ago, it enables libraries to pursue projects together. CAVAL created the CARM Centre in 1997 to house one million volumes in state-of-the-art environmental conditions and fire suppression. The CARM Centre is unique in that it is a true collaborative collection of little used research materials. Ownership of materials is relegated to the CARM Centre. Simultaneously, each member takes on ownership of the CARM Centre's total collection. This results in a collection with no duplication, a no-discard policy, and an expectation for 250 or more years or functional service. Moreover, it provides individual libraries with a means of rationalizing collections and the ability to avoid capital expenditures. There are many implications for the member libraries as well as to the library system in Victoria and beyond.  相似文献

Abstract

The author surveyed four university libraries in southwest Nigeria regarding access to their serials collections. It was found that in the libraries surveyed, undergraduates not in their final year often had at most limited access to the collections. This can be attributed to a variety of reasons including security and a lack of space; however, of more importance still is the fact that the collections are intended to cater mainly to researchers. In addition, it was found that the libraries usually provide open access to their serials collections, the collections are generally understaffed and suffer from a shortage of current, relvant journals.  相似文献

Newspapers in university libraries have never fared well as a basic information resource. They are used rather to supplement an enlightened patron’s daily dose of gossip. It is the writer’s contention that newspapers provide more than this.

Therefore the university libraries’ newspaper collections should be organized for maximum use.  相似文献

The paper discusses the impact of colonialism on knowledge production and library resources in post-colonial Africa. The discussion concentrates on university libraries in Africa and on the decline of monograph and serials collections and donor dependency in accessing online academic resources and information technology. The limited circulation of Africa-based journals in the industrialized world and within Africa is another concern. Examples are provided from authors listed in the African Journals Online and searched in the Web of Science database. The paper concludes with a brief discussion on non-dependent libraries in selected African countries.  相似文献

There is a long history of effective co-operation and national initiatives in controlling and sharing serial data in Australia. Prior to the 1980's this largely took the form of manually produced national union catalogues such as Scientific Serials in Australian Libraries: Serials in Australian Libraries, Social Sciences and the Humanities; and Newspapers in Australian Libraries. The commencement of the Australian Bibliographic Network (ABN) in 1980 provided the mechanism for both a national shared cataloguing venture and a truly national on-line union catalogue. The National Union Catalogue of Serials produced from ABN was dependent on the addition of holdings by ABN participating libraries. Several factors contributed to the growth of serials data on the national bibliographic database-notably the steady increase in the number of ABN participants undertaking serials cataloguing on ABN, serial conversion work on titles in the National Library card catalogues, and major serial conversion work undertaken by other Australian libraries. Allhough much has been achieved in the 1980's there remains much to be done to enhance the coverage of bibliographic and holdings data for serials on ABN.  相似文献

Many libraries have significant backlogs of uncataloged microforms. As attention has shifted toward digitized serials in recent years, unique holdings with high research value may be languishing untapped in the older, often overlooked formats of microfilm and microfiche. Libraries that devote resources to surveying and cataloging hidden collections of microforms greatly facilitate discovery of valuable resources for research. The current effort to survey, organize, process, and catalog more than 10,000 reels of microfilm in the Tamiment Library at New York University has vastly improved access to a multitude of uncommon serials that have been used by researchers, both onsite and via interlibrary loan.  相似文献

The second annual survey of serial resources indicates that growth of serial collections in university libraries is negligible. College libraries attempted to maintain "steady state" collections. Public libraries seemed to fare somewhat better, there were few cancellations. Only the two national institutions, Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and the National Library of Canada, achieved a systematic growth in their serial resources. Both are the largest lenders in the country.  相似文献

Librarians are the custodians of library materials. University libraries have a large number of materials in their collections; these collections have different challenges to maintain their existence and utilization. Security and protection of these resources is a difficult task. Book theft or loss is a phenomenon naturally associated with libraries and librarians. This article is an attempt to provide an overview of existing conditions of theft and loss of library material and to describe a major initiative that has been taken to overcome the situation. This study was designed with survey methodology and circulated to library professionals at 172 university and degree awarding institutions. There were 94 responses (54.65%) received. The study revealed that librarians faced objections from auditors and sometimes paid a penalty for stolen or lost books. The theft and loss of materials are examined critically by university management, library committees, and internal and external auditors. Some library professionals are required to pay from their own pockets for stolen and lost material. However, a few librarians write off library books as per Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) rule. Research highlighted that most libraries have not used technology such as RFID, 3M, or EM Tags for the security of books. An effective technological book security system minimizes loss and provides relief for librarians from audit issues and financial penalties.  相似文献

This is a brief report on a pilot project funded by the European Commission TEMPUS programme concerned with the modernisation of the university libraries in Syria and the enhanced visibility of the research outputs of the Syrian academic community. As background, it outlines the current state of the country's electronic and scholarly publishing, and the development of national and university computer networks. It reviews the project's contribution to introduction of automated library management systems with online catalogues and institutional repositories, and the expansion of journal collections. The issues likely to impact on further developments are discussed. Aspects of current professional education, including a shortage of qualified librarians with contemporary professional knowledge and skills, inhibit development. Other major challenges are the lack of effective strategic planning and poor management systems.  相似文献

This study is intended to answer the following questions: Have university libraries in Taiwan acquired books recommended by selection aids? Can university library collections in Taiwan sufficiently fill users' requests? Do libraries of different collection sizes process users' requests in an unbiased and efficient manner? This study employed interviews and document delivery tests. Librarians from 15 university libraries were interviewed to investigate their thoughts on ILL services. Samples from Choice and Bowker's Global Books in Print were searched for through the online catalogs of 148 university libraries. This study concludes that resource sharing will not operate in an equitable way if most user requests are only directed towards a small percentage of Taiwan's university libraries. Without an adequate quantity of volumes in the library collections of any region or country, resource sharing cannot be realized.  相似文献

This paper discusses collection management in Australian academic libraries. The author's sabbatical project was interviewing over 30 academic librarians in October/November of 1992 in eight of the largest research university libraries in Australia. These librarians gave their opinions on selection, acquisition, assessment, budget allocation, cooperative arrangements, and resource sharing. This paper also explores the recent changes in the higher education system in Australia and its impact on Australian universities and libraries, as well as the part Australia's distance from suppliers plays in procurement of materials.  相似文献
