The increase in the number of serial publications, the growth of holdings in libraries, and the maturation of librarianship are seen as largely responsible for the development of a specialty in serials librarianship by the time of the American Library Association's centennial celebration in 1976. This development often resulted in the organization of a separate serials department. In the decade following the ALA centennial several trends (e.g., economic stringency and automation) have converged to cause a re-evaluation of organizational patterns. In particular, the form versus function debate regarding serials organization is examined by reviewing professional activities and the published literature.  相似文献

《期刊图书馆员》2013,64(2-3):139-142
An examination is made of the components of the serials librarian's job, and an attempt is made to show how serials librarianship has developed over the past decade according to precepts laid down by Osborn in his famous book on serials. Warning is given against the tendency to relegate serials responsibility to the larger umbrella technical services unit that has gained recent favor.  相似文献

Because tasks and materials related to serials processing and use are often dispersed in a library, serials specialists must develop personal influence strategies and use informal communication systems that cross organizational lines and boundaries. In the absence of a serials department, therefore, serials specialists and informal serials communication systems will continue to exist. There is wide agreement that informal communication systems do emerge spontaneously in organizations and that individuals without formally conferred authority may use various types of personal influence strategies to accomplish organizational objectives. While serials processing and public service could be most efficiently handled through a serials department, informal communication systems, utilized by serials specialists, will develop if such a department does not exist. In determining if a serials department has a place in a particular library organization, library planners should be concerned about natural communication channels and should, in addition, try to identify individuals who can communicate effectively across organizational barriers.  相似文献

It is broadly acknowledged that effective serials management supports and requires a close link between the staff in technical and public services. More recently, new technological opportunities combined with changes in library organization and administration have greatly facilitated this linkage. The nature and structure of a library’s organization can aid in and benefit from this connectedness. Departments in the University of Louisville’s public and technical services areas began a cooperative effort to maintain serials records in the online catalog in the early 1990s. With reorganization in the late 1990s, a new team structure emerged which further facilitated this effort. In return, this cooperation and the tools that it has created support the teams in a new user-centered approach to serials management.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Documentation is the written record of activities, policies, and procedures within a certain organization or group. Libraries, especially technical services units, need to be more vigilant about documenting the important activities of their departments for current and future use. After looking at past library literature, this article highlights ways to incorporate documentation into acquisitions, serials, and cataloging units while emphasizing the importance of these activities and making sure all staff members are involved.  相似文献

Reference work, like technology, is rarely value-free, and librarians often respond to over-used but urgent topics such as drug abuse, pollution or welfare in a negative, weary way. The role of the humanist at the reference desk is to foster a sense of community by helping students uncover the complexities of these issues, by introducing students to the work of people and organizations who care deeply, and by showing students how to become informed and involved. A currently developing resource is the flood of house organs from these organizations. While some publications are regular serials indexed in standard sources, others are not, but all are the best effort the organization can make to present the views of its members. A simple practical way is suggested for making these serials available to students.  相似文献

The traditional library organization for over forty years has been divided into technical services and public services. The age of automation, however, is bringing these two areas much closer together, and in some large academic libraries, the technical services librarian and the public services librarian are the same person. The work done in serials acquisitions and collection development is now available online in many libraries. Several libraries also have automated serials control and cataloging capabilities. With the advent of online access to serials, reference, interlibrary loan and library instruction services have simplified the work demands for the reference librarian. This conclusion suggests that cooperation between technical services and public services is the logical solution to provide the best possible service to the library patron.  相似文献

This is a review of the literature and a selective, annotated bibliography on serials automation from 1976 to 1984 with an emphasis on recent English language publications. The bibliography is subdivided by topic: bibliographies; reviews and collections; bibliographic control, including ISBD(S), ISDS, ISSN, NSDP, CONSER, and AACR2; serials control, including chcck-in, claiming, binding and routing; systems and vendors; standards; union catalogs; fiscal control, and the organization of serials work. The selection of 150 citations highlights important events and trends and describes some lesser known developments. This review is written from the point of view of the working technical services librarian. Subjects for further research are suggested.  相似文献

Serials and technical services librarians are in a unique position to share valuable expertise in public service and bibliographic instruction settings. Skills learned in the organization of information and experiences with electronic resources such as e-journals, databases, and the Internet, translate well into the user services arena. Several serials librarians, who have worked in both technical and public service positions, discuss the professional and personal rewards of public services.  相似文献

Summary

The management issues facing those who deal with serials in special libraries may be common to all special libraries, unique to the particular discipline, or shared by all libraries struggling to deal with serials in the 1990s. A law librarian and a medical librarian described the history, nature, and use of serial literature in their respective subject areas, and discussed important customer issues facing their libraries, including the financial aspects. They were joined by a vendor's representative who summarized the similarities and differences in these library situations from a vendor's perspective, including the opportunities and limitations of the vendor/special library relationship.  相似文献

Summary

This paper describes examples of changes that occur within a serials unit's work flow when a library migrates to an integrated library system (INNOPAC). In this particular library, the organization and physical arrangement of materials also has changed, compounding the situation.  相似文献

In 1962, an analysis of interlibrary loan requests for serials filled by NLM in 1959 was published. In the twenty-five years following 1959, important changes occurred in the biomedical library community, which had a significant impact on interlibrary loan activities, including the development of MEDLARS and online searching, the Regional Medical Library (RML) network, and union listing for serials. To describe NLM's current interlibrary loan request traffic for serials and to identify any significant changes in traffic between 1959 and 1984, a comparative analysis of 1984 serial loan requests was performed, primarily by manipulation of automated request records. The changes in request traffic strongly suggest that the efforts to strengthen regional document delivery through the RML program have been successful and that NLM's collection is now used primarily as a last resort.  相似文献

Serials, one of the more complicated areas of library technical endeavors, has lacked the benefit of standards for a long time. Even now, with standards beginning to be available, the majority of institutions are not working within standard serials formats. A survey to determine the use of serials standards in libraries was conducted in 1988 by the American Library Association, Resources and Technical Services Division, Serials Section, Committee to Study Serials Standards. In the spring of 1988 a survey was sent to a group encompassing the Association of Research Libraries members, CONSER participants, United States Newspaper Program participants, Microform Project libraries, and some vendors and librarians who attended the Committee meetings on a regular basis. The survey questionnaire assessed the current level of serials standards awareness of librarians and vendors. Topics included the type of serials systems used, standards relevant to serials control and union listing and whether or not they are implemented, types and levels of training staff received in the application of standards, benefits of the standards, and areas where standards are most needed.  相似文献

A review is presented of the creation, activities and evolution of the Regional Serials Committee of the Serials Section of the American Library Association's Resources and Technical Services Division. For approximately ten years the committee has been using various means to evaluate serials matters and to inform librarians concerning these. The committee has sponsored workshops and published helpful manuals. Energies are now being directed toward the collecting of educational materials to be used in serials/training for acquisitions, check in, claiming, cataloging, binding, retrospective conversion, public service and automation. These materials are to be made available to interested librarians.  相似文献

Up to 1976, serials automation had progressed to a point where the activities of the bibliographic networks was increasingly important, and the CONSER project had been launched. However, most union lists of serials were still being compiled manually, and the computers used for library applications consisted primarily of (expensive) mainframe computers. Several events took place in 1976: the Library of Congress received a grant for CONSER 11; OCLC's serials check-in system became available; NCLIS established a Task Force on a National Periodicals System; and the first major revision of the copyright law was passed. This article discusses the progress made or the changes that have occurred since 1976 in: CONSER, the bibliographic networks, union lists of serials, stand-alone systems, electronic mail, full text services, copyright, and organizations providing services involving serials.  相似文献

Serials are a familiar academic job responsibility, but serials librarians are becoming difficult to identify. While serials continue to exist, the transition from print to electronic resources contributes to a trend in which the job titles of librarians who manage serials no longer include the word “serials.” A content analysis was conducted to examine the prevalence of the word “serials,” as well as common synonyms including “continuing resources” and “periodicals,” in U.S. and non-U.S. academic library job titles. In a sample of 98 U.S. national and regional universities and colleges, 18 librarian and 98 staff job titles were found that included the word “serials” or a synonym for serials. By comparison, a sample of 71 universities from 8 non-U.S. countries revealed 17 librarian and 85 staff job titles that included the word “serials” or a synonym for serials.  相似文献
