ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the transformations in the Slavic and East European book trade in the 1990s. Among the challenges these changes pose to Slavic librarians are a profusion of new vendors, very small print runs, and a general breakdown in bibliographic control throughout the region. It argues that vigilant and timely selection is critical in order to obtain materials before they go out of print. Cultivating direct relationships with vendors both in North America and in the region is also required in order to continue to build Slavic collections successfully. It also considers the performance of English language approval plan vendors, electronic vs. print, and the ominous implications that the trend toward mergers and economies of scale hold for library collections.  相似文献

This paper provides abroad overview of the history of the New York Public Library's collections, and most particularly of the NYPL's changing relationship with the city's diverse émigré communities over the past 104 years. The focus of collections has changed over the years with the population served, as have the library's strategies for serving user needs. Having a good understanding of the variety and concentration of rare holdings in our libraries is becoming more and more important, not only for preservation and access purposes, but also for collection management and marketing. This article details how WorldCat's standard search interface can be used to identify holdings unique to particular institutions, or to compare the holdings of one or more institutions based on the relative rarity or ubiquity of the materials in their collections.  相似文献

Abstract

Administering special collections within an academic branch library presents challenges in the areas of public services, collection management, facilities planning, and staffing. In art and architecture libraries, special collections can include a variety of materials such as rare books, trade catalogs, builder's guides, graphic and visual materials, artists' books, archival records in many formats, and files of ephemera. Public service issues relating to the administration of special collections housed in an architecture branch library (and its off-site repositories) will be addressed. ABSTRACT

Memoirs are presented from a career spent largely in Slavic librarianship. After serving as Slavic specialist at Lancaster University (U.K.), Walker was from 1971 in charge of Slavic collections at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, and latterly also Head of Collection Development until his retirement in 2002. He was responsible for building the Bodleian's Slavic holdings, making extensive use of exchanges with Soviet and East European libraries. He researched and wrote on the Soviet publishing industry, relaunched the journal Solanus, and produced several bibliographies. He led the COCOREES national collaborative collection management project (1999–2002), and currently manages its successor, CURL-CoFoR. References to his principal publications are given.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article surveys the collection devoted to the memory of Emperor Nicholas II held at the Museum of Russian Culture in San Francisco. The author describes the cataloged materials of a unique collection of materials passed on to the Museum by Russian emigrants of the first and second waves, many of whom worked to preserve the memory of Russia’s last Sovereign and also made a significant contribution to the creation of the Museum and its archival collections.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the last 20 years, national, regional, and academic libraries and other cultural institutions in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia have introduced subject portals, research databases, journal repositories, digital collections, research guides, and indexing resources, which scholarly communities outside these regions rely on to advance their research portfolios. In order to address the significant developments in scholarly communication and the proliferation of academic content, this article discusses recent trends in online research resources and strategies for incorporating these resources into research consultations. In addition, as these extensive networks of online resources continue to proliferate, possible models for collaboration with national and regional libraries are needed to strengthen existing partnerships with Slavic librarians outside these regions.  相似文献

Special collections play an increasingly important role in university libraries. As library collections move to digital formats and collections are similar from one library to another, special collections are one of the ways in which libraries can build a distinct identity. Because of their unique nature, special collections must be permanently retained because of their artifact value and need specialized storage conditions with appropriate levels of security. The effect of digital technology on special collections has been profound and ongoing. The purpose of this article is to explore the effect born digital materials, digitization, and intellectual property have had on special collections in the 21st century. In particular this study will focus on how archival materials have been significantly transformed by interacting with digital technology—providing both challenges in management and opportunities for new online environments to expose this content worldwide. Abstract

In the early 2000s, the dissemination of digital information resources was overwhelming library collections. Libraries struggled to make these materials discoverable in OPACs. The PCC stepped up its priorities to develop training, standards, and procedures for addressing digital content. Two events influenced the thinking and the direction of the PCC: The Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium: Confronting the Challenges of Networked Resources (2000) and the 2004 CONSER Summit on Serials in the Digital Environment. The discussions and the priorities resulting from these events provided guidance to the PCC.  相似文献

The author presents strategies any librarian or researcher with access to OCLC WorldCat may use to answer many kinds of questions concerning foreign-language materials in their own or other libraries. These advanced searching strategies, some not obvious and some even hidden in the WorldCat interface, may also be used to help collection managers generate valuable information about their library’s collection strengths in specific languages, and by extension, make comparisons with collections at other institutions. ABSTRACT

Preventive conservation, with its origins grounded in the material fabric of cultural material, is in a period of transformation, with numerous practitioners, in and outside of the field of conservation, considering its broader and holistic objectives. The conventional tools for the assertion of preventive conservation principles, namely the assessment and management of risks to cultural material from the ‘ten agents of deterioration’, have a central focus on the primacy of physical materials and degradation, with less clear relationships with people, place, and time in their modelling. With a case study focus on collections in the Philippines, this paper argues for a practice of preventive conservation that incorporates a balanced assessment and broader thinking around the contexts of objects, people, place, and time. The case studies of ecclesiastical Church collections, and museum environments in the Philippines, demonstrate how the interdependency of objects, people, place and time forms a holistic and conceptual preventive conservation framework. Through a cyclic renegotiation of these four parameters, this paper speculates on the gaps and opportunities for an inclusive view of preventive conservation that is current and more sustainable.  相似文献

Abstract

Nearly every library where the dominant language is English also has materials that are written in other languages. These materials can present unique challenges for catalogers. Many non-English language materials are located in the array of collections of the Special Collection Department of Mississippi State University (MSU). To properly process and catalog these materials, the cataloger used online tools which provided a greater understanding of the materials, allowing a higher cataloging standard. ABSTRACT

This study examines information about the display of early Soviet visual anti-religious propaganda in the past in order to conceptualize its re-presentation in the digital future. Based on recent research conducted in the Hoover Institution Library and Archive and other American and Russian collections, it considers printed visual images of the 1920s–1930s, including posters. It also investigates the theory and practices that guided their display detailed in the specialized literature and disseminated in the anti-religious periodicals Bezbozhnik and Bezbozhnik u stanka. These materials make it possible to recover the structures and contents of historic propaganda displays and to replicate and re-exhibit them virtually with digital technologies.  相似文献

Abstract

Some North American scholars believe that libraries on their continent lack adequate indexes and other finding aids to identify scholarly publications and primary resources from Slavic and East European countries. In the belief that such materials can be located only by using esoteric finding aids, they may overlook the major Western subject bibliographies and indexes for the humanities and social sciences. In addition, during the past decade an increasing number of research library catalogs in North America, Europe and Eurasia have become accessible electronically to scholars around the world. The author here lists and describes bibliographic databases which can be of value to a search for Slavic — and East European language research materials in the social sciences and humanities. Many of these tools can be found even in smaller North American academic libraries.  相似文献

Abstract

Libraries and archives are the subject of increasing depredations by thieves and vandals. One effective means of protection against losses to such criminals is sequestration of intrinsically valuable library and archival materials and making them available through a restricted access reading room. The identification of users of library and archival collections in such reading rooms is carefully authenticated. The actual use of the collections is done under constant staff scrutiny and is well documented. Response to reading room theft should be carefully choreographed but decisive.  相似文献
