It is said that there is no hero in The Merchant of Venice, but a heroine, who is Portia, an independent, intelligent and beautiful Renaissance lady, who makes great efforts to grasp and defend her happiness. Her excellent performance in Shylock’s suit also exhibits her extraordinary splendor as the focus of the whole play. However, she has to accept the conventional orientation for a woman’s fate, obedient to her father and her husband, and yet she cannot participate in the social career unless in disguise.  相似文献

Maggie Tulliver is the heroine of The Mill on the Floss. Nearly the girl’s whole course of life was described in this novel― from her sweet and painful childhood to her courageous death in order to save her beloved brother Tom. A passionate, intelligent and sexually attractive girl is completely unacceptable to the society of "angels at home". Her characteristics, undoubtedly, form a big challenge to the society in which she lived. And through the creation of such a special girl with resisting spirit, one is able to understand better George Eliot’s creative motive.  相似文献

Since the publication of the Good Earth in 1922, Pearl S, Buck published another two novels based on the same theme and they were called the House of Earth Trilogy. The House of Earth Trilogy used as a window to understand China for the westerners at that time. And it had a great impact on the whole world. People gave two different views on her success of winning so many awards. Some thought that she wrote what she knew and her works were based on her own experiences. But others said that she was a foreigner and her values, her distinct aesthetic views would affect her writing. So, some of her depictions, to some extent, were untruthful and distorted. The aim of writing this thesis is to give an objective judgment on the Good Earth, and make it easier for us to communicate with the westerners on literature.  相似文献

The peculiar images, the boat and the sea, often recur in the poems of Emily Dickinson, the great American poet, which well reflect her internal conflicts, the conflicts between being an autonomous woman and being a passionate yet submissive woman. In her poems, the sea is a symbol of the male-dominated society or an individual man. While the little boat is the epitome of Dickinson:sometimes it wants to be strong-willed and clear of its destination, sometimes it just wants to moor in the sea and enjoy the calmness. The paper tends to reveal the psychological struggle of Emily Dickinson and show the whole image of her as an individual through the analysis of the images of boat and sea in Dickinson’s poems.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy is an outstanding novelist in the nineteenth century. He has produced numerous works including novels and poetry. His tragic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a great impact on the world literature. The paper is focused on the exploration of Tess’s tragedy through her life experiences.Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors—her family aspects, love experiences and her social images, which also contribute collectively to poor Tess’s destiny. The social background of the period provides a basis for the novel, and the deformed social values and morality is the root of her tragedy, together with her personal temperament and the Christian religious influences.Christian mores of self-sacrifice,wide love and purity have a great effect on characters in the novel. In the fourth part, there is some enlightenment from Tess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society.Tess is a woman with good qualities and her experiences give a warning to women today:the proper treatment of one’s behaviors and the social rules is critical.  相似文献

Sister Carrie is one of the most controversial characters in American literature.Thought as a "fallen woman" firstly, she was defined as a "new woman" by some critics later. However, by digging into the motivaton behind the whole process of Carrie's "success", the relationship between Carrie and her creator (the author), the social conditions of then American, it can be found that Carrie has never been free-standing on her thought and she has never found her real-sdf even after becoming a famous actress. In a society dominated by mass consumerism Carrie is only an adherent of her own desires. She also is a representative of all those country girls flooded into cities, a symbol and a sacrifice of the urbanization of America in a time countryside was overcome by cities.  相似文献

On the perspective of psychoanalytic criticism, three human psyche models propounded by Freud,Jung and Lancan were employed to reveal the psychological trace of the tragic character, the grandmother in The Acorn-gatherer.Back to the country life in late Victorian England,a lonely elderly widow had to bring up her illegitimate grandson, but her grandson couldn’t bear her mistreatment, left home and died accidentally. The old grandmother bore the hardship strenuously but had to live her old and ailing days lonely which is like a candle guttering in the wind.Deluged with the social discrimination and bias led by the collective unconscious, her help doesn’t come from anyone in the utilitarian oriented grass roots.Nor does it come from the Lord’s real redemption owing to a country woman’s limited knowledge and inwardness.Under the great strain from the grey society, she was gradually distorted mentally. As a result, she was victimized by the grey tide of the society but she herself was a victimizing force to her grandson. The psychological exploration of the piteous victim can thoroughly interpret the author’s implication,i.e.condemning the evils of the society and man’s wicked nature.  相似文献
