The ‘Dissertations into practice’ feature began life in March 2012 with a dual aim: to encourage students and new professionals to write for publication and to highlight the impact of student research on policy and practice. This article reflects on the initiative and to summarise what has been achieved so far. It highlights the diverse range of contributions to the feature so far and proves that student research can and does influence policy and practice. It also demonstrates that, with a bit of encouragement and support, students are willing and able to write for academic publication. AM  相似文献

Most business law faculty agree that their students should be exposed to outside reading in order to broaden their understanding of course materials, better relate the law to practical business situations, and become aware of future trends in the legal environment. For these reasons, many business law teachers send their students to the library to research and write reports using various source materials, including cases outside the textbook, historical background material on the various areas of the law and current journals and newspaper articles. For those teaching at large universities with well-stocked libraries, the choices of research sources are many and varied. However, for those teaching at small universities or community colleges, the choices may be quite limited indeed. Often, at the smaller schools, business law teachers may be given a very limited budget and allowed to order only a few books a year. The question arises, then, for the business law teachers at smaller schools: "What are the most important research sources to have in their libraries?" If a priority list could be drawn up, those business law faculties would be able to use the little library money they do have in a more beneficial way. This article will discuss the library materials which business law teachers feel are necessary as resource tools, and the order of priority in which they should be acquired. The information supporting this article will be acquired by a survey of randomly selected teachers of business law in AACSB-accredited schools.  相似文献

While research training often takes place during every day practice, for the majority of library and information professionals, essential training will have been received as part of the dissertation element of their degree. However, there is a danger that important dissertation study findings are not disseminated if, for example, the student has moved onto a new job. The Health Information and Libraries Journal seek to address this research/practice gap with the introduction of a new feature 'Dissertations into Practice' specifically tasked with providing a safe and structured environment for students to disseminate their dissertation project findings.  相似文献

For centuries, readers have added marginal commentary to books for a variety of personal and public purposes. Historians have mined the marginalia of important historical figures to observe their sometimes raw, immediate responses to texts. Now, reading and annotation practices are changing with the migration of content to electronic books. A survey of reader attitudes and behavior related to marginalia for print and electronic books reveals that the majority of readers write in their books and want e-readers to support this feature. However, many readers report that annotating electronic books is too difficult, time-consuming, or awkward with current technology. In addition, the way readers annotate books depends on whether they are reading for pleasure or for work or education. These findings can guide the development of future devices to better satisfy reader needs.  相似文献

This feature looks at changing the format of a well‐established information skills session for first‐year biochemistry students at UCL, to improve its design, delivery and the overall learning experience for the students. After reviewing current literature, active learning methods were explored and an idea of a research‐based quiz based on famous scientists was devised. After a brief introduction to the library resources available, the students were ‘let loose’ to research their particular scientist and answer a series of questions. Feedback was gained and evaluated and concluded that the session was well received by students. The feature also raises the discussion of generic verses subject‐based information skills training. Conclusion Freelancers provide unique resources for publishers. Because of their special expertise, unique viewpoints, and even geographical location, they provide publishers with customized materials in disciplines and locations where the expense of full-time writers would not be justifiable. They will continue to be an important factor in the publishing industry. Publishers will continue to write contracts that allow them to republish articles in all known and future formats. Problems still exist with articles published before 1995. Publishers will have to decide how they will respond to Tasini, whether that means some version of the PRC or deleting articles. It is hoped that a final agreement between authors and publishers, according to the decision of the Supreme Court, will result in minimum inconvenience to the research public. New technology presents many challenges, as well as many opportunities, for freelance writers. As technology evolves, copyright law must ensure that writers’ incentives to create are nurtured and that they are fairly compensated for their work. Authors whose work creates value should share in the revenue and opportunities created by those technologies.  相似文献

Bus-based systems are very attractive because they are simple and easy to use. Most of the models available in the literature for bus-based systems are for circuit-switched systems. The throughput of a packet-switched system is higher than that of the circuit-switched system due to the fact that in a packet-switched system all the resources can be used at their own speed. Some models of packet-switched multiple bus systems are available in literature [2], where read and write references are treated equally. This means that a processor is blocked after it submits a memory reference, and it is kept in the blocked state until it receives the operand (for a read reference) or an acknowledge signal (for a write reference) from the memory. Some extra throughput can be obtained if the processors are allowed to go back to computation immediately after they submit write references. Stanford's DASH multiprocessor system [20] uses such a technique.This paper shows analytical models to determine the performance of packet-switched multiple and partial multiple bus systems, where the processors are blocked after read references but not after write references. The analytical models have been verified by the simulation models. The results show that when 20% of the memory references are for write operations, 12% more throughput can be achieved if the processors are not blocked after write references.  相似文献

Students who reported being high or low communication apprehensives in interpersonal encounters were asked to read a letter from a terminally or not terminally ill patient and write a letter in reply. These students also completed a variety of self‐report measures. In essence, high CAs were found to be less willing to communicate, less willing to volunteer, less willing to work with terminal patients, and felt less confident about their communication than low CAs. High CAs also disclosed less to terminal patients than did people in any other circumstance. Further, terminal patients who were depicted as quiet received less self‐disclosure and less communication that was sensitive to their perspective than did those in any other circumstance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Librarians at the University of Dubuque, in collaboration with writing center staff, created a project that incorporates critical thinking, ethical inquiry, and information literacy into a beginning composition class. A team of faculty, librarians, and writing tutors lead student peer groups as they write a research paper using common journal articles in support of a single thesis. Because a recent campus-wide ethics initiative frames this assignment, students examine topics which may challenge their existing beliefs. This article describes how the team conceived, implemented, and evaluated this project.  相似文献

In their mission or goals statements, most universities declare their commitment to promoting a multicultural campus. A multicultural campus can only come about with the creation of an environment that provides the support and encouragement that allows for academic growth and success for international students. Reference librarians serve a special role as information providers and can play a significant part in ensuring the academic success of these students. To achieve this, we must first increase our basic understanding of the cultural and economic impact of international students at a national and university level. Further, recognizing the unique pressures under which these international students function will increase awareness and help us to position ourselves to effectively meet their information needs. Conducting research is a challenging but essential component of an undergraduate geography education. Students typically need instruction in fundamental skills such as using library resources. In this study we describe how we, a geography professor and a librarian, integrated information literacy into a newly revised course in which geography students design and write a research prospectus. We assessed student knowledge and self-reported confidence in library research skills at the beginning and completion of the course. This study describes increased information literacy among students who entered the course with a range of abilities and offers areas for further research.  相似文献

A review of the research on how social scientists access the literature in their disciplines shows that academics rely on nonsystematic methods of keeping abreast of published research. These methods can affect how their students seek out and utilize information, as reflected in articles on literature seeking skills published in teaching journals. The skills for seeking out and evaluating information will be essential for both faculty and students who hope to remain current in their disciplines, especially in areas that are interdisciplinary and bibliographically diverse. Therefore, it is important that librarians formulate, promote, and seek active support for innovative approaches that will integrate these skills into the curriculum.  相似文献
