Culture, which is one of characteristics of a nation, plays an important role in translation. There is a relationship be tween culture and translation and the ways for cultural transmitting from one language to another language. So,the translator has to capture and project the special cultural quality properly in the target language.Cultural transfer is all about a multi-pronged ap proach, focusing on the author’s relationship with his subject and that with the reader, which should be expressed in a good work.  相似文献

To a student of English, reading is one of the four basic skills. And his ultimate goal in reading English is to be able grasp idea as quickly and eaily as he would if he were reading his native language. Yet in early stages of language acquisition, the first inclination in reading of most English students is to translate. Translation is a slow, laborious process. The writer's train of thoughts may become lost, as well as the enjoyment of reading. Moreover, translation is an art in itself and not a practical procedure for everyday reading. The student should attempt to develop a feeling for the target language so that he is really reading, not deciphering word for word.  相似文献

Translation means the conversion of an expression into another language. To say plainly,It is an art to reproduce the exact idea of the author by means of a language different from the original. So the original thought of the expression must be kept as exactly as possible. The duty of the translator is simply to change the vocabulary not the thought. Literal translation and free translation are two essential ways in translation. Literal translation refers to an adequate representation of the original in sequence of vocabulary, in grammatical structure and rhetorical device. Free translation is also called liberal translation, which does not adhere strictly to the form or word order of the original. Which one is preferable? We can hardly say. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.Argument between them has been more than 80 years. What on earth is the argument? What do they focus on? The argument brings great effect to us, so I want to find some answers to it.  相似文献

Culture and language are both products of hum an society. This paper concerns the close relationship betweelanguage and culture. Some social scientists consider that language is the keystone of culture. Language is a media of communicationwhich is culturally conditioned. Culture, as a significant feature of human society and the soil for language emergence as well abackground for language use, is closely knitted together with language. However, current teaching syllabus in China does noprovide a system of the specific cultural contents to be included in any teaching program. Culture as a set of traits is by and largeneglected area and has drawn little attention. According to a famous professor Hu Wenzhongs paper, more than 90% students admithat there is a cultural gap between native English speakers and Chinese English learners and all of them think that awareness ocultural difference should be made a goal in language learning and teaching. In intercultural communication, culturamisunderstanding is often worse than linguistic one and tend to create ill feeling between native speakers and Chinese speakers oEnglish. Therefore, cultural mistakes as well as linguistic mistakes should be avoided in order to be successful in inter culturacommunication.  相似文献

Audiovisual production,as social media, plays a considerable role in cultural exchanges around the world, for it is one of the ways for people to know more about exotic cultures. At the same time, due to language barriers, the importance of subtitle trans?lation is gradually recognized. The subtitle translation can go beyond the limits of time and space to faithfully reproduce the story plot and skillfully convey the feelings. From the perspective of relevance theory, the subtitle translation of The Big Bang Theory is chosen as a case in this paper to analyze the inferential process in the following three relevant aspects:relevance in context, rele?vance in culture, and relevance in the audience.  相似文献

Culture is a complex concept; it includes knowledge, religion, politics, arts, laws, customs and the ability of any national peopleat a certain time as a social member. Therefore, different nationalities have different cultures. In the process of translation, a good translatorconsiders not only the different words, but also the different cultures concealing in the words. Translators should ignore the past view on "language instrument", and establish " cultural language" stressed in the different culture.  相似文献

Language is the carrier of a culture. It contains rich cultural information. Therefore translation is not merely to convert one language into another, and it is also a communication activity which involves converting one type of culture into another.Cultural factors begin to gain more and more attention of translators.we find that cultural differences pose major barriers in translating.A thing which is self-evident in one culture has to be painstakingly explained in another. The most serious mistakes in translating and interpreting are usually not the result of verbal inadequacy, but of wrong cultural assumptions.Hardly can any text be successfully translated without appropriately dealing with the differences between source and target cultures. Therefore in this paper I intend to analyse the differences between Chinese and Western cultures as reflected in translation, then to put forward some translation methods(domestication and foreignization)in dealing with them.  相似文献

The Holy Bible,as one of major sources of Western Culture, has a great influence on the Christian culture and Christian thoughts.Because language is a carrier of culture, the English study will be water without a source and a tree without roots if we ignore The Holy Bible which is the core of Christianity. To study English demands not only grammar and vocabulary, but also the culture behind the language.A brief analysis of connotative meanings of color terms, which are influenced by The Holy Bible and applied in literatures, will be given,in order to offer some help to English learners to know the connotations of color terms better,to understand literatures more profoundly and to have a general feeling about the impact which The Holy Bible has on language.  相似文献

Idioms are gems of a language which have been refined through ages of use. Idioms are thus always rich in cultural connotation and national flavor. Lots of cultural information is embedded in idioms. Language is a part of culture. Language is the important carrier of culture. Language and culture have close relationship with each other. The study of the relationship between language and culture has been considered a subject of great value. Owing to this, translation theorists and translators have put more attention to the cultural barriers that exist in translation. Therefore, translators have to better understand the relationship between language and culture and the relationship between culture and translation so as to render idioms from the SL into the TL faithfully and effectively.  相似文献

The status of English in today’s world has been established definitely. It is not only embodied in the increasing numbers of speakers, but also embodied in the role which English has played in some non-English speaking countries.English is spread as an International language in worldwide and which is no longer belonging to any English speaking countries but belonging to those who use it(McKay,2002).The consequences of English spreading are:on one hand,English as an international lingua franca status has been further consolidated;on the other hand, different regional variants appear in English. These changes lead to the debate between Standard English and varieties of English. All of these in turn generate a profound impact on English language teaching.China as one of non-English speaking countries has also been the impact of globalization in English. The English teaching in China is facing challenges and innovation.  相似文献

Metaphor is a common linguistic phenomenon and always realizes its value within a certain context.Metaphor uses words to indicate something different from their literal meaning-one thing is described in terms of another so as to suggest a likeness or analogy between them.A metaphor can easily be seen as a bridge which links and comprises the known and the unknown, the familiar and the unfamiliar. Some people hold that metaphor tends to be seen as a way of coloring the ordinary plain language.Meanwhile some people think that metaphor is regarded as a way of experiencing the world. An analysis on English and Chinese metaphor translation will help to strengthen our understanding of different languages as well as different cultures. This paper focuses on the structure and features of metaphor, correspondences and several techniques in metaphor translation.  相似文献

As is known to all,Tang Poem(TP) reflects the humanities, the place and the people, the political and cultural life of the Tang dynasty.TP must be translated cautiously and detail.Poetry translation may be considered a rivalry between two languages(or even between two cultures) which vies to express the original idea best. That is to say,it is most important to grasp the cultural background in that period before one can study the translation of TP from a cultural perspective.Culture will not fade as time goes by and will not vanish as the world changes. How do TP be translated into English by application of linguistic context analysis? Firstly, the translator should have a thorough understanding of the content and background, and accordingly use various techniques of translation,e.g.Literal translation, free translation, transliteration, etc;furthermore, the style of the original must be given serious consideration.Linguistic context analysis includes phonetic context analysis, syntax context analysis and syntactic context analysis. As for the syntax,as far as syntax is concerned, there are many differences between Chinese and English.Mr.Wang Li points out:"western language is rules-oriented,but Chinese is man-oriented"(Shen Xiaolong.1990:141).As for the syntax,he says:"structure of TP is close-knit and flaws less, which is inflexible, but western grammar isn’t." this theses attempts to analysis how does an English version of a TP embody the style of the original poetic work by using proper syntactical form.  相似文献

As a form of cultural exchanges,it isn’t avoidable for translation and culture to be closely connected and influenced by each other. In the translation process, target work is influenced by all kinds of cultural elements so that target work is different from source work in some degree. The content of source work remains the same, but the form of that is changed more or less as the result of the target language culture.Sometimes the culture of the source language and that of the target language may be on equal footing complementary but sometimes they might be unequal because of their different position of comparative advantages, one culture is neglected. The cultural elements of translator have a great influence on the target work. The target work is the recreation of the translator.  相似文献

Translation is a linguistic activity, trying to change speech or written article from one language into another one. It not only includes the content but also the form. The reproduction of the original content refers to the surface meaning and the extended meaning, while the form also refers to pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence instruction as well. All that should be taken into consideration during translation in order to convey the major idea of original work fully and correctly.  相似文献
