Henry James' s first novella Daisy Miller brought him popularity and literary reputation after its publication. Through the application of reader theory and a close reading of the text, this article analyzes Daisy's strong personality and her misfortunes during her trip to Europe, and reveals how the novella highlights the conflict between American frankness and innocence and European sophistication. Besides, this article also elaborates on James' unique artistic skills—central consciousness and psychological analysis through his choice of narrative point of view, which contribute to the theme and the artistic charm of DaisyMiller. 相似文献

Arthur Miller was considered as the most famous dramatist in America after the World War II, and his representative work Death of a Salesman was recognized as the best play in America during the post-war years. It was also considered to be one of the best three plays in the history of American drama; with A Streetcar Named Desire and Long Day’s Journey into Night.Through the failure of two generations, this play addressed the painful conflicts within one family, and it also tackled greater issues regarding to Americans’ national values.As an average person, Willy Loman had experienced hopes and pains, struggles and frustrations as well as dreams and disillusions, at last he chose to commit suicide. Based on the existent materials, the predecessor’s researches as well as her own thinking, the author of this paper gives a brief analysis of the leading role’s tragic fate, which mainly elaborates three important stages of Willy Loman’s tragic life: disillusion of the American Dream, the abandonment and the betrayal, aiming to decode the root of Loman’s tragedy from the perspectives of society, family and the protagonist’s character. The Awakening of Self-consciousness of the African American Women—an Analysis of Dee in Everyday Use
Alice Walker is one of the prominent American writers in American women’s literature and black literature in 1950s-1960s. Everyday Use is regarded as Alice Walker’s best-written short story. The prevailing opinion among the critics about this story is that Dee is the traitor of black American’s cultural heritage, and the mother and Maggie are the hope of true value of the African Americans’ tradition and heritage; however, after considering the historical and cultural background of the story, we may safely come to the conclusion that Dee actually took the first step toward the awakening of self-consciousness of the African Americans women. 相似文献

The Merchant of Venice is one of the most contradictory plays of William Shakespeare.Through presenting and studying the tragedy nature of Shylock,this thesis attempts to illustrate the tragic nature of Merchant of Venice.In this paper the author tries to reveal the significance of its tragic nature through thorough analyzing.Shylock’s tragedy is the tragedy of individual struggling,which shows in the aspects of family,money and religion.The profound reason for Shylock’s tragedy is his Jewish identity.Therefore,the author of this paper is enlightened hereby,turning to a lot of books and data,and then analyzes the origins of Jewish prejudice from two aspects,society and history.Christianity has dominated the west,with its doctrine mainly derived from the New Testament.Meanwhile,Judaism derives its doctrine from the Old Testament.Therefore,the pious Christians will be misled by the contents of libeling Jews and the murdering of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.So a kind of instinctive hatred toward Jews is generated.This kind of tendency is rather clear in the play The Merchant of Venice.In this play,Shylock mentions several times that Antonio has insulted him physically and mentally in the Rialto.Almost all the characters in the play humiliate Shylock.But,he just endures all these insults quietly,and then looks for the chance to revenge.In the end,under the delicate trap set by the authority,Shylock loses again.He loses everything he could lose,both materially and mentally.Nothing is more frustrating than that.However,the author of this paper believes that it is worth paying attention to in the present day.In this paper,the author chooses this topic,presents and analyzes the tragedy of Shylock,and reveals the positive significance of the tragic nature of the play for our time. 相似文献

Inhabited by women with male characteristics and men possessing female features, the Dunnet Landing in Sarah Orne Jewett’s masterpiece The Country of the Pointed Firs is depicted as a harmonious land of beauty, from which Jewett’s preference of androgyny is fully expressed. In this novel, androgyny is used as a means by Jewett to achieve her feministic idea of the equality between men and women and that neither of the sex has prejudice upon the other in this combination. The aim of this paper is to determine the elements which hinder peace, and emphasize the importance of the contribution of foreign language learning to international peace. Language affects the thought and behavior of human beings. The attitude of a person knowing more than one language of a position is not the same as a person not knowing a foreign language because of that the first person can comment about the position in different standpoints. He can see and evaluate the events in a much broader perspective. As knowledge gives comfort, peace and confidence to the human beings, ignorance causes repulse and revulsion. Knowing a foreign language means entering a world of human beings thinking and believing differently, accepting different life-styles, illuminating, clarifying the obscurities which cause prejudice and revealing human behaviors which seem not comprehensible whereas they are actually very easy to understand. A theory can be developed from all explanations emphasizing the contributions of knowing a foreign language to the international communication. The theory is called ＂push and pull theory in communication＂. The huge building of ignorance, which is the place of big wars and conflicts, can be eliminated through the power of love and peace language. To obtain international peace, all the nations in the world should try to maintain and create legal and social background in order to realize their common goal ＂international peace＂. All the governments should come together and develop a common program which provides a contribution to the improvement of the international peace language, which should be taught as a lesson called ＂common peace language＂ in all countries. Foreign language teaching should be started at the very early stage if possible. This thesis aims at analyzing the Chinglish in press conference interpretation with context adaptation of Belgian linguist Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework.In Adaptation Theory,context includes all kinds of factors that concern the environment in which the communication takes place,with non-linguistic factors like the physical world,the social world and the mental world playing an important role.Taking the press conference interpretation of the 2nd Guangdong International Consultative Conference as an example,the author attempts to prove the presumption that Adaptation Theory can be applied to spot and reduce the Chinglish in interpreting.It is concluded that the theory of adaptation to the mental world and social world can be applied to reduce the Chinglish of two particular kinds to the minimum level and achieve successful communication. 相似文献
