This article describes a computer program developed by the author to extract subject-level usage and inventory data from Aleph system reports and to track usage trends by subject over time. Two implementations of the program are detailed, at the Institute of Fine Arts Library and the East Asian collection at Bobst Library, both at New York University. Use of the program in processing inventory, in-house usage, and circulation data in greater detail is demonstrated. Information about usage trends within major Library of Congress subject areas provides collection managers with more precise data for use in a variety of collection management decisions. The article shows that the program offers significant new functionality for collection assessment. 相似文献

In 2014, Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska Fairbanks conducted its first collection condition survey. The institutionally significant Alaska Collection was chosen as a manageable project. Research design based on the literature review led the researcher to conduct two surveys: one examining the entire collection and one looking at only those books most recently circulated. The combined surveys revealed that the circulating books are much more badly damaged that the books in the collection that do not circulate, across a variety of attributes. 相似文献

Needs analysis is a systematic process whereby information concerning a service agency and its environment is gathered by a variety of data collection methods. The information collected is then utilized for assessment and planning purposes. This paper discusses the application of needs analysis to a social science discipline utilizing three data collection methods: syllabi study, journal scatter study, and content analysis. The results of the needs analysis are triangulated and discussed, and the feasibility of needs analysis in an academic library setting is assessed. 相似文献

This article presents the results of a long-term study of the use of print monographs in a non-circulating fine arts library spanning a period of seven academic years, from September 2008 through June 2015. The data were collected daily across the entire collection and are analyzed using Library of Congress Classification subclasses. Changes in subject areas of use over time are highlighted. Salisbury University and the University of Maryland, College Park, both undertook projects to evaluate the effectiveness of EBSCO Information Service’s EBSCONET® Usage Consolidation product and the usefulness of the extracted data for collection development decisions. The goals of implementation were to centralize the collection and analysis of e-resource usage data and to allow collection management librarians easy access to usage and cost per use data to aid in their decision making. ABSTRACTRisk management approaches have been increasingly used at the British Library to inform and support collection care decisions. This paper addresses the ways in which these methods have been used to address specific preservation issues at the Library, using appropriate case studies: rehousing the microfilm collection, adapting pest management protocols, replacing box-making equipment and assessing the environmental conditions of the philatelic collection. As well as allowing complex, multi-faceted preservation problems to be addressed, this approach also allows options to be presented in a succinct and readily understandable manner to non-specialist colleagues and other stakeholders and helps to ensure buy-in. 相似文献
