Recruitment theory considers the relative importance of a range of factors (i.e., individuals, experiences, and other factors) in the decisions of those who select a profession, a professional specialty, and a specific employer. This study of the recruitment of bilingual librarians is based on a survey of the membership of REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library Services to the Spanish Speaking). The data reflect the factors that influenced the career decision making of current library and information professionals who are, in the main, bilingual and Hispanic, as well as the factors influencing potential retention decisions. The research results indicate the importance of factors, such as entering a service profession and the desire to serve the Spanish-speaking community, in particular. As is the case with the prior (and limited) recruitment research in the profession, this article provides insights in terms of recruitment strategies for bilingual librarians who serve this segment of the population. While the research relates to a growing segment of the U.S. population, with its demographic complexity and range of information needs, implications, which are applicable to other language groups, bilingual circumstances, and other countries, are considered, as well.  相似文献

In the 1980s, biomedical indexing and bibliography are at a level unmatched in history. In spite of a monumental effort by librarians, information specialists, and indexers, a large number of students and professionals in the health sciences are unable to capably use the biomedical indexing and abstracting tools that have been so laboriously produced. The authors attempt to trace the origins of bibliographic instruction to the health profession, examine the successes and failures of librarians who tried to teach the medical profession to do library research, and suggest why this type of instruction has not become more widely accepted as a compulsory part of medical education.  相似文献

What does it mean to be a professional, and do librarians meet the academic definition of a professional? Professions are strongly related to identity, and stereotypes associated with the culture of a profession are going to have some effect on the public’s perceptions of that profession. The stereotype of the vaguely purposed but somehow controlling older person (who “shushes” patrons to maintain silence) does not contribute positively to the professional image of a librarian. Library users do not even superficially understand what librarians do, and this leads to an undervaluing of the impact and importance of librarians. In the modern environment of budget challenges, it is important to be able to articulate the value of both libraries and particularly librarians. This article explores the sociological academic literature on professions to determine if librarianship meets the requirements to be a profession, if library literature supports librarianship as a profession, and why it matters for librarians to be seen as professionals.  相似文献

Consulting is an activity some librarians are occasionally asked to perform as an outgrowth of their profession, while others may be considering it as a part-time or postretirement career. This article is a primer for the librarian who is interested in being a consultant. The author, who has performed numerous library consultations in her career, discusses the attitudes and skills that make a successful consultant, together with suggestions for finding clients, setting rates, writing a proposal, negotiating a contract, performing the actual consultation, and writing the final report. Librarianship posits itself as a profession that strives for neutrality, particularly within customer service and information provision; however, factors such as political activity, conference programming, and disproportionate representations of specific viewpoints in the literature indicate that neutrality may be compromised. These factors may alienate librarians who do not subscribe to majority political opinions within librarianship. A phenomenological study was conducted to understand the career experiences of academic librarians who identify as socially or politically conservative. Themes linking service provision, ethics, workplace relationships, and professional engagement emerged that demonstrate the professional impact politicized activity has on practicing librarians in all specialties.  相似文献

To grapple with the difficulties of change, LIS literature often turns to a discourse of leadership as a way of gaining an understanding of how change can be effectively and appropriately managed. However, much of this work fails to account for the feminized nature of the profession and the gendered practices that shape the roles of men and women who choose this field. Furthermore, there is an absence of literature that interrogates the ways in which LIS master's programs address gendered practice. Beginning with an examination of how the field of LIS is feminized, I set out to reveal how, within the context of gender, the experience of women who advance in LIS leadership and administrative positions remains poorly understood. I suggest that the adoption of masculinized practices is a response to the devaluation of “women's work” that has historically defined the service ethic of librarianship. This article serves as an example of the ways in which it is possible to interrogate assumptions about leadership.  相似文献

As is implicit in its name, the purpose of the Association for Professional Broadcasting Education is to work to continually improve the quality of education available for college students interested in joining the profession of broadcasting. The Journal of Broadcasting, as an agency of the APBE, has published some six dozen articles dealing with this subject in the eight years of its existence. However, the rapid growth of broadcast education, the normal turnover of teaching personnel, and the more‐than‐one‐generation span of this field of study have combined to make it difficult to see where we have been, and doubly hard to see where our present activities (as educators and broadcasters interested in broadcast education) are leading us. The following article attempts a broad survey of the first thirty‐five years of broadcast education. It is published for the benefit of the students in these curricula, the professors that teach them, the broadcasters who are called upon to test the “end product” and those in each category who recognize that one of the most important criteria for judging whether a body of activities is truly a profession is the quality of the education made available to the would‐be practitioner, and the traditions that lay behind it.  相似文献

Given the small number of library/information service professionals from minority groups the profession can not afford to fail to make recruiting from cultural/ethnic/linguistic minorities a priority. This will require innovative recruiting tactics on the part of current professionals to guide para-professionals, non-professionals and volunteers to entering this profession. It will require some degree of flexibility on the part of schools of library/information science to meet the needs of these students. Employers too will have to make it possible for current staff who desire it to complete their professional education. Since the first dental school was founded nearly 130 years ago, dental education has followed an expanding but relatively unchanging pattern. During the last decade the many social changes taking place in our society have been influencing the profession in such a way that dental education and dental practice must necessarily adjust to satisfy the increasing demands for dental care. The profession is studying ways in which these adjustments can be made most efficiently. In library and information science (LIS), mentoring is often viewed as a significant influence on student choices and professional career directions. Most mentoring programs are built around the idea of a ‘seasoned’ or experienced professional working with an individual who is new to the profession. There is a common assumption of the mentoring process being a primarily one-way relationship – with the mentor sharing knowledge with a mentee. However, in our recent research, it is clear that mentoring is often seen as a much more reciprocal relationship. Abstract

Is the conservation profession dividing into two groups – specialized technicians often working in private practice, and generalists in the heritage sector whose work is often in preventive conservation covering a diverse range of materials? If so are we moving away from conservation specialists, who contribute to the wide range of processes involved with object care and research within particular curatorial disciplines? We examine the increasing distancing of conservators from collections and their curatorial colleagues and will assess how this is reflected in the changing nature of training courses, and the impact this may have on museums in the future. These issues are discussed with reference to the National Museum of Wales, which has recently undergone an externally refereed conservation review. The outcomes of this can be viewed in relation to other institutions employing conservators.  相似文献
