This study applied Erwin Panofsky's concept of levels of meaning of works of art and Corinne Jorgensen's framework of image attributes to an exploration of the distinct levels of meaning perceived by children in illustrations of picture books. Observations, interviews, and surveys were used for data collection and content analysis and case study for data analysis. Thirty-one three- to five-year old children recruited from preschool, pubic library, and home school settings participated. Findings showed that children relied on their previous experience and familiarity with the literary source to achieve levels of meaning. The concept of levels of meaning could provide a better understanding of representing meaning for children and children's interpretation of meaning of visual information.  相似文献

近年来很多关于阅读的研究表明,绘本是儿童早期教育的高品质载体,它的作用越来越受到人们的关注。目前,很多对绘本的研究只关注其理论上的重要性,欠缺有效的数据支持。采用发放问卷并收集调查数据的方法对公共图书馆、小学和幼儿园等主要的教育机构进行调查,可以了解绘本阅读的现状,以利于找到有效的方法,推动绘本阅读的推广与研究。  相似文献

Abstract

Administering special collections within an academic branch library presents challenges in the areas of public services, collection management, facilities planning, and staffing. In art and architecture libraries, special collections can include a variety of materials such as rare books, trade catalogs, builder's guides, graphic and visual materials, artists' books, archival records in many formats, and files of ephemera. Public service issues relating to the administration of special collections housed in an architecture branch library (and its off-site repositories) will be addressed. Collection care and access services will be examined in light of recent technologies.  相似文献

The reading of picture books contributes to the development of language skills and literacy. The visual content of the books helps to develop these skills but also enhances the effect of the text, develops children's aesthetic understanding, and provokes emotional response. By studying children who regularly use picture books in classrooms, Barbara Kiefer develops a framework for understanding children's responses to picture books and observes the growth of cognitive and aesthetic responses. Her findings have implications for illustrators, publishers, educators, and librarians. Barbara Kieferis an associate professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she teaches courses in children's literature, and reading. Originally trained in art education, she taught grades two, four, and five before completing her doctoral studies in language, literature and reading. She was elected to the 1988 Caldecott Award Committee and has served on the executive committee of The National Council of Teachers of English.  相似文献

中国原创图画书开始走向世界,但中国图画书的历史可能比西方更早。图画书本质上是一种出版现象,在中西方不同文化背景中有不同的呈现方式。中西方图画书同源于儿童读物的插图,随着出版科技的进步和读图时代的到来,从“出版热”逐渐形成“文学热”,从“文字的儿童读物”演化为“图画书的儿童文学”,在新世纪交流融合中发展为儿童文学的典型样式——绘本。中国原创图画书的复兴有其深刻的历史文化背景和深厚的民族文学传统,建设中国特色的图画书评价标准和理论体系应该提上议事日程。  相似文献

Understanding why people attempt to remove, relocate, or restrict books in an age of ubiquitous access is one of the more puzzling aspects of contemporary challenge cases. In order to better comprehend this largely symbolic phenomenon, this study focused on the arguments that book challengers employed to justify the removal, relocation, or restriction of books in 13 challenge cases in public libraries and schools across the United States between 2007 and 2011. Three sources of discourse, which were coded for common themes, were analyzed. The first consisted of a variety of documents, obtained via state open record requests to governing bodies, which were produced in the course of challenge cases. Recordings of book challenge public hearings constituted the second source of data. The third source of discourse consisted of interviews with challengers. The study found the following common themes in challengers' worldviews: First, they saw contemporary society as being in a state of decline and were concerned with preserving the innocence of children in the midst of this decay. Second, they constructed public institutions as symbols of the community that must represent their values and aid parents in their difficult role as boundary setters. Finally, challengers demonstrated a reverence for the books as a material object and employed common sense interpretive strategies. It is hoped that this analysis will offer a starting point for comparing the discourse of challengers to the discourse of other social actors and aid librarians and other information professionals in providing effective responses to challengers to materials in their respective institutions.  相似文献

When schools are on break, some households may be constrained to provide educational resources to their children. Public libraries could be low-cost providers of materials and services that foster educational investment. This research extends existing literature by combining household-level data (public library checkout counts, residential property tax assessment values, student enrollment rosters, and distance to public library measures) to conduct a panel analysis of public library use across the public school calendar. The empirical analyses find that public- school breaks generally impact library use for households with children in public school, but not for households without children in public school or for the lowest socioeconomic status households with children in public school. Distance to library is found to be negatively correlated with public library use for all households, but differentially and dependent on households' socioeconomic status and structure. Lastly, community events and weather are identified to impact use.  相似文献

Libraries continue to be an important source of books for young people, though relatively little is known about how gender and age influence visitation frequency for this purpose. In addition, while supporting children to choose books is part of the role of both school and public librarians, little is known about the strategies and processes children use to select books, and the beliefs and attitudes that underpin them. Findings from the 2016 Western Australian Study in Children's Book Reading offer insights into these areas that can support librarians to guide book choice, and they encourage targeted intervention to ensure that boys and older children make use of their libraries to support their literacy growth.  相似文献

This article aims to provide an overall picture of the use of Twitter as a significant social media tool by mayors in Turkey and to investigate, using content analysis and tweet categorization, whether Twitter is used by mayors in Turkey to offer better public services. Thus, this study focuses on the impact of Twitter in Turkey on transparent, participatory and citizen-oriented local public services. Our analysis has revealed that mayors in Turkey use Twitter especially to share information, send personal messages and share their location and activities. The use of Twitter for transparent, participatory and citizen-oriented public service delivery is not common among mayors. Twitter is adopted and used by mayors mostly for the purposes of self-promotion and political marketing in Turkey.  相似文献

The way children's cognitive states affect how they function in digital interfaces is examined through articles published between 1989 and 2010. Children have developmental limitations, such as underdeveloped motor skills, difficulties with spelling, and trouble understanding hierarchies, classification schemes, and metadata, that make it difficult for them to find information, and challenging for adult designers to accommodate their needs. From icons to metadata to hierarchies, the best research in designing digital resources for children, (OPACs such as Pejtersen's Book House, online public libraries such as the Internet Public Library, and online collections of books such as the International Children's Digital Library), places the child user at the center, and takes an interdisciplinary and intergenerational approach. The literature indicates that research in designing for children is valuable, not only because it seeks to improve children's experience with digital resources, but also because such research translates to other marginalized users and special needs populations.  相似文献

本文首先归纳出儿童展览阐释的四种表达方式,即用于参与的体验设计、用于参与的探索设计、用于感知的符号设计和用于观察的视觉设计,尔后挖掘影响表达方式选取的儿童认知特征,并试图深入解读认知特征背后的教育动机,即0~3岁儿童重感官教育,3~6、7岁儿童重感性教育,6、7~11、12岁儿童重具象逻辑教育,11、12岁儿童重抽象逻辑教育,通过反逻辑过程推演出不同年龄段教育动机指导下适用的表达方式,以提升儿童展览的专业性与有效性。  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Underappreciated data concerning libraries' holdings and circulation over the past century and a half offer insights into the behavior of libraries and their users. Book circulation per public library user indicates an outcome of users' demand for books and libraries' supply of books. From 1856 to 1978, library users borrowed from U.S. public libraries about 15 books per user per year. From 1978 to 2004, about 25% of book circulation shifted to audio‐visual circulation. Over about a century and a half, library book circulation per user shows no strong, long‐run trend either up or down. This outcome suggests that libraries have adapted to maintain the stability of their operation and that library borrowing practices are well‐embedded in popular life.  相似文献

Lester Asheim's famous piece Not Censorship but Selection published in 1953 is still valid in characterizing the spirit of the censor versus the selector. As information control and censorship differ from one place to another and from time to time, the Kuwaiti school library scene's practices of collection building in both the public and private education schools reflect this old age practice and its features. The conflict between selection and provision on one hand and prevention and censorship on the other is very clear in schools; as schools are responsible for providing access to information.  相似文献
