Abstract

Mounting digital images of art objects on a Web site is only the first step in providing patron access to such materials. Libraries and museums have a responsibility to provide not only high-quality digital reproductions but also high-quality access from an integrated library catalog with controlled vocabulary and consistent access points. While some digital collections may have excellent internal searchability and require no more than collection level cataloging in a library's OPAC, others may demand cataloging of individual components of the collection. A particular collection's significance, its potential audience, the types of access required, as well as factors such as its size and cohesiveness need to be considered before becoming locked into a specific Web designespecially when it is that of another institution.

This paper examines several online library catalogs in which records for art objects as well as historical objects and natural history specimens have been merged, with varying degrees of success, and briefly addresses a modest proposal to catalog ceramic objects at the Ohio State University Libraries. The importance of consistent subject access in a merged catalog, regardless of the thesaurus or thesauri used, is stressed. Library consortia and bibliographic utilities may offer an economically appealing alternative for libraries that cannot design and construct their own digital libraries but these external organizations often have limited capability for-or interest in-modifying the design for a particular library and even less interest in cataloging the collections. Libraries, too, must be faulted for simply listing available electronic resources, either alphabetically or in broad subject categories, on a separate portion of their Web page and failing to provide full catalog records in their catalog. Finally, it is emphasized that the current debate over the viability of MARC 21 versus other metadata standards remains largely irrelevant to the importance of continuing to cultivate a monolithic online catalog, maintaining cataloging standards, and not mindlessly developing what amounts to a separate, rudimentary catalog solely for electronic resources.  相似文献

2013年6月通过的《马拉喀什条约》为方便视力障碍者获取作品提供了国际法依据。被授权实体是该条约的核心概念,本文将其界定为解决无障碍格式版作品的匮乏与传播问题而被赋予一系列针对著作权的例外与限制的非营利性组织。公共图书馆具有较为丰富的服务视力障碍者的经验,具备传播无障碍格式作品所需的资源和能力,是合适的被授权实体。为了推进该条约在我国的实施,建议我国著作权法明确图书馆的被授权实体地位及其可以享有的例外与限制、所提供服务的受益人范围等。参考文献6。  相似文献

Internet Protocol (IP) technology has played an important role in the management of access to scholarly work within institutions since the advent of electronic publishing in the late 1990s. Despite recent efforts to explore alternative modes of authentication, the ubiquitous use of IP address authentication within the systems of libraries, publishers, and third party vendors around the world suggests it will continue to play a significant role for the foreseeable future. However, recent studies show that a large amount of the IP address data held within publisher systems is incorrect, improperly assigned, or requires clarification. Poor source data carries significant risks—not the least of which translates into unreliable usage reporting for libraries and publishers. The IP Registry is designed to help mitigate these challenges by creating a Registry of cleaned data that libraries and publishers can interact with in a centralized fashion thereby helping to ensure accuracy and reducing the level of resources necessary to manage and communicate changes to existing data. The database of more than 60,000 academic, corporate, and government libraries was created through the amalgamation of raw source data from more than 170 scholarly publishers. In addition to cleaned IP address data, the Registry includes standardized English naming, aliases, local language naming (and characters), hierarchies, and organizational IDs for each record. The importance of accurately understanding current usage and how libraries utilize published content is clear. Regardless of what the future holds, the need for a clean and stable source of IP address data is real for libraries, publishers, and vendors alike.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 随着图书馆新一代管理平台ALMA及以PRIMO为代表的发现系统在国内的推广应用,图书馆新服务平台环境下电子资源访问故障问题凸显,影响用户体验并困扰着图书馆员。由于电子资源访问故障成因复杂,其机理和应对机制已成为图书馆关注的重点。[方法/过程] 对国内外发现系统相关电子资源访问故障研究进行文献调研;分析从用户在发现系统触发检索请求到访问全文的流程;对ALMA系统上线以来若干电子资源访问故障案例进行分析。[结果/结论] 总结发现系统环境下电子资源访问故障成因及解决机制研究进展;梳理从用户在发现系统触发检索请求到访问全文的流程;结合案例,从Primo Central Index元数据质量、ALMA数据质量和相关配置、电子资源自身信息变更3个方面详细分析电子资源访问故障主要成因。提出图书馆可从为用户提供易于操作的访问故障反馈渠道、收集分析访问故障案例、建立电子资源故障解决流程、提升馆员解决电子资源故障的能力等方面应对访问故障。  相似文献

UGC is providing access to scholarly electronic resources (e-resources) to Indian universities through the UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium. Access to subscribed e-resources is being provided free of cost to member universities. The whole program is funded by the UGC and executed by the INFLIBNET Centre. Now, the UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium is in its 11th year and it has been expected that privileged academicians are utilizing available e-resources extensively and optimally. In this paper an effort is being made to assess, how social science faculty working in Indian universities have been using e-resources, what are the problems they are facing in accessing them, and what are the efforts made by INFLIBNET to spread awareness about such an ambitious initiative of UGC among social science faculty members. This paper also highlights some important issues with respect to use, acceptance and planning of this consortium.  相似文献

��[Purpose/significance] Electronic resources accessproblems are increasingly obvious because of the launch of new service platform ALMA and PRIMO, which confuses the librarians and affects users' experience. Library should pay more attention to it.[Method/process] The paper reviewed the literatures on electronic resources troubleshooting, analyzed the flow chart of electronic resources access in discovery system and also investigated examples of commonly encountered access problems.[Result/conclusion] Summarizing the research progress on electronic resources access issues and outline the access process. Major reasons of access trouble are examined from 3 aspects:metadata quality and configuration in Primo Central Index and ALMA, information change of electronic resources themselves. The World Wide Web and other information technologies have deeply changed our information environment and influenced how we index and access the information we need. The library is a good example of this revolution. Instead of a building that holds books, the library is evolving into an electronic portal to digital materials from across the globe. Facing so many distributed and heterogeneous digital resources, layered metadata are efficient but sophisticated tools that make it easier to find the best information resources. In recent years many types of item-level metadata with which people are familiar have appeared. In contrast to item-level metadata, collection level metadata has not been broadly used, especially in China. By illustrating what a collection is and why we should create collection level metadata, we introduce the research and usage of collection level metadata in China and analyze the problems and limitations of the metadata being used. The intersection of ethics and economics is rarely discussed in the library literature or at conferences. This may be due, in part, to what economists describe as a romantic value system, that is, the belief that resources are or should be unlimited and available for exploitation by every individual with a need. But recent changes in the national economy for libraries are forcing a realization that individualistic codes of ethics and value systems do not always result in socially desirable consequences. The problems of information management and access cannot be solved by ethical individuals acting alone. Instead, a new consensus is needed on collective ethical behaviors to ensure that health information resources are managed for the common good.  相似文献

This article presents an overview of the working lives of tribal college and university library directors and other library staff at the beginning of the 21st century. While little has been written on tribal college and university libraries in general, even less is known about what it is actually like to work at these libraries—the daily joys and frustrations and the factors that contribute to both positive and negative work experiences. The increasingly electronic environment in today's academic library is placing new demands on managing reference services. Staff are faced with selecting, implementing, and servicing a wide range of services and resources. This necessitates learning the new and integrating it into the established. At the same time, users are becoming more varied. Not only is their demographic profile changing, but more users with interdisciplinary interests are seeking assistance. Reference librarians are also working to establish new interfaces with the increasing number of users who wish to access resources without coming into the library. This article addresses the management of reference services in a medium-sized research library to meet these needs. Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service that increases user access to resources, however it is of little use if no one knows about it. ILL statistics at libraries generally show that the service as a whole is well used, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that these high usage statistics are generated by library power users, and not by new, novice, or intermediate users. When conducting thorough research, it frequently extends beyond the holdings of an individual library, which makes ILL essential. Therefore, it is important for users to know about and use this service. While ILL enhances what libraries can offer, very few libraries focus their marketing on ILL. Instead, most libraries simply lump ILL into the marketing of library resources and services in general. In this article we analyze libraries that have broken out of the mold to market ILL in innovative, cost-effective ways, and we will share the marketing campaign we undertook at Wheaton College (IL).  相似文献
