Educators always have two differing arguments over the functions of native language in the foreign language teaching. Many educational practitioners oppose the idea of using native language in second language teaching process due to the grammar translation approach still popular. The grammar translation approach underscore that native language and functional grammar should not be applied to the foreign language teaching. By utilizing different types of second language teaching theories, the author put great emphasis on the function of the native language in the second language teaching particularly on the function to the basic and intermediate level learners. The author contend that: we should exert the necessary function of the native language in foreign language teaching especially for the adult people. Native language should act as a catalyst in this process. Foreign language teachers should not refuse using native language. They should make the best use of native language in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) process and thus help student to form English thoughts. Nowadays, facing so many foreign language teaching methods and theories, we should seek the essence and get rid of the dross. As the famous English saying goes: keep the baby and throw out the bath. This essay deals with the long controversial issue of whether transfer of native language has a major or minor role in the second language acquisition.Based on a brief introduction of all the literature regarding the language transfer in SLA and investigated through a deeper look into the main theories on the role of native language,the essay points out that the role of transfer of NL is evidently far from being as definite or dominant as it is supposed to be.The essay asserts that language universals but not the NL facts were found to play the leading role in the transfer.It holds that Universal Grammars are functioning in determining where language transfer occurs,and thus comes to its conclusion that the role of transfer from NL is inferior to that of UG in SLA,which explains why among second language learners there has been a remarkable common experience that language learners in the early stages will produce in the target language linguistic forms which can be related neither to their mother tongue nor to the target language. 相似文献

People have controversial ideas about the influence of our native language during the process of second language acquisition.The popular belief is that native language(NL) interferes the second language(L2) learning,which is known as negative transfer,while positive transfer is seldom mentioned,or even is neglected in the study of second language acquisition.We found that in teaching when the L2 learners experienced difficulties in understanding another language,they may resort to their NL to get help.So we can’t only think about its negative aspect.In fact that NL plays a positive role in SLA,so we should make full use of the common features to lead to the positive transfer,then to strengthen the confidence of the second language learners. 相似文献

When to immerge students in the target language community is a hot issue debated by many researchers through the whole linguistic and second language research history.While as far as my hypothesis concerned,I argue that it’s a better way for second language learners to learn some basic language skills before getting involved in that language community,including the target culture,fundamental second language skills,and first language abilities.Meanwhile,I demonstrate my argument from four aspects:age factors,first language factors,cultural factors and motivational factors.And I argue that English learners receive late immersion perform as well as or better than children in early immersion programs,since there is a direct relationship between native language and second language learning.As long as second language learners are literate in their first language,then their abilities in first language can facilitate the second language learning and can discipline themselves in the process of how to learn a second language.Meanwhile,transmitting cultural knowledge plays an important role in second language learning,and the most suitable approach is to do preparing transmission before students entering the real cultural community,i.e.the preparing work should be done before students getting involved in the language community;otherwise they may catch the cultural shock and are reluctant to explore the target culture.This paper aims at finding a most comfortable and preferable environment for learners to learn a second language and providing parents who are planning to send their children abroad some feasible advice. 相似文献

The medium of （oral） language is mostly disregarded （or overlooked） in contemporary media theories. This ＂ignoring of language＂ in media studies is often accompanied by an inadequate transport model of communication, and it converges with an ＂ignoring of mediality＂ in mentalistic theories of language. In the present article it will be argued that this misleading opposition of language and media can only be overcome if one already regards oral language, not just written language, as a medium of the human mind. Taking advantage of vast electronic text resources, the corpus-based approach has contributed a lot to linguistic research. It can be applied to almost all areas of investigations in linguistics (Biber, Conrad and Reppen, 1998) . At the same time the role of corpora in the language classroom remains a great controversy.
