Summary Graduate schools of library and information science (LIS) are rediscovering civic engagement. Examples illustrate how LIS students further diversity efforts through service-based learning experiences. LIS students involved in the American Library Association's Spectrum Initiative helped plan the leadership institute and the longitudinal study of scholars. Students prepared pathfinders for faculty at tribal community colleges and tribal schools. LIS students helped develop and operate “If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything,” a national reading program for schools serving Native children. LIS students helped create a virtual tour of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). 相似文献

ABSTRACT I visited Albania from September 6 to 12, 2004 as a guest speaker of the U.S. Department of State. I gave three lectures on library use of information technology and on information resources–two at the National Library of Albania and one at the House of the Book and Communication. The lectures were in English, but the accompanying PowerPoint presentations had captions in Albanian. The 40 participants from several libraries across Albania and Kosovo knew English but were given Albanian translations as well of my lectures. I also visited the municipal library in Vlora. This report summarizes my daily activities and the three lectures during my time in Albania. 相似文献

Abstract Academic branch libraries located at a distance from the parent institution often face unique challenges in meeting users' needs for scholarly information. This is especially true for distant branch libraries that do not have a specialized function or collection, but who often face the challenge of meeting users' needs for scholarly materials across a wide array of academic disciplines. This paper discusses the definition of academic branch libraries and the information access plan developed for the Regents Center Library at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus, located some 40 miles from the main parent institution, the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. In addition, a discussion of the mission, academic programs, and special user characteristics of the Edwards Campus that impacted the development of the information access plan is included. Finally, the factors that affected and will continue to affect the plan, along with methods for managing the implementation of the plan, are provided. 相似文献

AbstractAt the end of 2017, the National Library of China (NLC) was invited by the RDA Board to become the National Institution Representative for Asia. It is a good opportunity for the NLC to be more visible and to contribute to the international community. However, RDA promotion is a demanding task considering the economic and professional conditions in Asia. In this article, we (1) summarize RDA study and practice in China especially NLC’s advances, (2) analyze the survey of Asian libraries conducted by the NLC in 2018 with regard to RDA, and (3) discuss RDA promotion initiatives undertaken by the NLC. 相似文献

Abstract Edward G. Miner Library, the health sciences library at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is reaching out beyond its usual user group to improve health knowledge of members of six inner-city African-American churches and one community center. With the Congregation Healthy Heart Action Partnership (CHHAP) and the Rochester Public Library as partners, and with funding from the National Library of Medicine, Miner is providing Internet access at the churchesand training church and community members to use reliable health Web sites such as MedlinePlus. A train-the-trainer approach and follow-up meetings empower church members to carry the information to others. In addition to trainees learning about reliable health Web resources and Rochester Public Library's health resources, new relationships between libraries and churches have resulted. It is hoped that this program will help reduce health disparities between Rochester's inner-city minorities and residents of the surrounding suburbs. 相似文献

AbstractThis article presents examples of metadata collaborations between the Swiss National Library (NL) and research institutions in the field of Swiss historiography. The NL publishes the Bibliography on Swiss History (BSH). In order to meet the demands of its research community, the NL has improved the accessibility and interoperability of the BSH database. Moreover, the BSH takes part in metadata projects such as Metagrid, a web service linking different historical databases. Other metadata collaborations with partners in the historical field such as the Law Sources Foundation (LSF) will position the BSH as an indispensable literature hub for publications on Swiss history. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe need for research support in U.K. universities is growing at a fast pace and a number of different professional and academic units within universities are involved in the process. This case study takes place in a post-92 higher education institution and discusses the benefit of utilizing a cross-university Community of Practice (CoP) approach to delivering research support services. It takes a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews to ascertain the personal experiences of community members. The article's key findings for successful implementation include a common sense of purpose; a shared concern or passion about the research agenda; a sense of community and belonging; trust; a safe environment; and senior management support. Added benefit is demonstrated by enhanced staff knowledge, increased job satisfaction, and profile-raising of the Library and Learning Service. The findings can help libraries in similar positions to use collaborative initiatives to develop research support services. 相似文献

AbstractThis article analyzes the role of national bibliographies—with particular reference to the Italian National Bibliography—as relevant tools for national bibliographic control. In the first part of the article, the historical and scientific context of international standards is summarized. The second part describes the role played by the Central National Library of Florence (BNCF) in the realization of the bibliographic control of Italian publications. A rare cache of over 200 Ukrainian ex libris recently discovered in the Slavonic Library of the Czech National Library in Prague serves as the primary focus of this article. As a unique archival resource, the bookplates not only shed light on the social fabric of the Ukrainian émigré community in Czechoslovakia between the two world wars, but tell of aesthetic pursuits that would seek to reconcile modernity with Ukrainian artistic traditions. In all, the collection informs on the tastes and personalities of Ukrainian cultural luminaries in interwar Europe. As part of a larger proposed project—Ukrainian Émigrés in Czechoslovakia (1918–1945)—these ex libris will be incorporated and preserved as part of a digitized catalogue unifying émigré posters, leaflets, and other ephemera of the interwar period, including invitations called pozvanki. 相似文献
