As a method of bridging language and culture, translation has played a significant part in connecting the ideas of people all over the world and accelerating the communication in politics, economy, culture, education, science and technology. China has increased cultural exchanges with many other countries, and a great number of foreign films have flooded into our country. Thus, how to appropriately translate the foreign films becomes an urgent issue. In the process of translating English films to Chinese ones, the translator should use a method to attend to the content of the movie itself, especially recreational artistic features, as well as tremendous differences between English language and Chinese language culture. This paper attempts to compare the different film versions of Pride and Prejudice (edition 1995), and analyzes the examples of literal translation and free translation in order to reveal the difficulty of which translation method to choose in film translation. Thus, based on the comparison, we could get a tentative result that which kind of film version is more accepted by most audiences so that we can provide the film translators some new train of thought.  相似文献

The Italian film The Last Emperor has strong color of post-colonialism,therefore,my paper will analyze the film from the perspective of post-colonialism.The two important terms in post-colonialism theory closely related to the film are "Orientalism",and "the other".My paper focus on analyzing the China’s image in European films from the angles of "Oriental ism" and "the other".My paper reveals that the China’s image in European films can’t break away from Orientalism, and the western world describe the oriental world according to its own imagination and think itself as a savior to the oriental world. Therefore, what we Chinese should do is being initiative to describe ourselves to shape a new image of real China.  相似文献

The article mainly focuses on Chinese and English idioms and their cultural differences. Idioms exist in both Chinese and English, and they have been used frequently for a long time. Furthermore, idioms are fixed phrases extracted from language over long time of usage. Although they are formed in short phrases, for example idioms known as "成语" in Chinese, which has only have four or eight letters, their meanings are exuberant and connotative. Therefore, the analysis of the idiom’s usage and the cultural differences it reflects is significant to every language learner and translator.  相似文献

Chinglish is what occurs when the Chinese language and English language crash into one another. When native Chinese speakers who are learning English attempt to directly translate Chinese into English, using Chinese sentence structure, wording and grammar,a blend of Chinese and English happens.Among Chinese English teachers and English as a second language (ESL) foreign experts working with students, this phenomenon is commonly referred to as Chinglish. In order to help students to overcome Chinglish in their oral English and cultivate their sensibility of foreign culture and mode of thinking the awareness of the causes of Chinglish is a must. This paper focuses on analyzing the causes in terms of negative transfer of mother tongue and the differences between modes of thinking and cultural backgrounds.  相似文献

The goal of teaching English speaking is to improve students’ communicative efficiency, or make students speak the target language clearly, coherently, accurately and fluently (Xu, 2005). However, in China, a number of students in an English speaking class tend to be passive and reluctant to speak out or be singled out publicly mainly due to their high anxiety, which, of course, becomes a significant constraint on improving their English proficiency. Therefore, how to create a relaxed atmosphere with a sense of security in the English speaking class to alleviate Chinese learners’ anxiety and to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to practice speaking English and improve their English proficiency is one of the central tasks for language teachers.his paper will firstly outline my teaching context in China in physical, pedagogical, institutional and personal aspects. This will be followed by the definition and classification of language learning anxiety, and the analysis of various factors contributing to foreign language learners’ anxiety as well as some suggestions of how to reduce the learners’ anxiety in the oral class according to the current literature. Finally, some applications will be presented in my teaching context in the hope of decreasing Chinese students’ anxiety to enhance their English speaking proficiency.  相似文献

Language transfer is one of the areas that have received special attention in the research of third language(L3).This paper focus es on the transfer of syntax from first language(L1) and second language(L2) in the early stage of third language acquisition(TLA).It aims at finding out whether L1 or L2 is the main source of transfer and trying to account for this phenomenon in light of typology and psy chotypology theories.A story telling task is used among 8 university students who have Chinese,English and French as L1,L2 and L3.The findings indicate that although both L1 Chinese and L2 English exert influence on L3 French production in the form of transfer, more L2 transfer occurs due to the typological and psychotypological similarity between L2 English and L3 French. The results confirm previous studies on the important roles of typological and psychotypological similarity in determining the source of transfer in a multilin gual’s language production. Some pedagogical implications of the findings are also discussed.  相似文献

Politeness is a very important topic in modern linguistics. With the development of the study of linguistics, a lot of people lay the emphasis on the study of politeness language. It can be observed in all languages and cultures as a social phenomenon, which plays an important role in individuals’ linguistic behavior. But due to different culture, different politeness principles and other reasons, different peo ple have different understandings about the definition of politeness, and they deal with politeness in different ways. Through different study background, principle and theory, this paper focuses on the politeness language in English and Chinese culture caused the differences. Politeness languages are mainly expressed in the forms of address, greeting, congratulation, appreciation and apology . The biggest difference between English and Chinese is that the Chinese system is profusion and complicated, but the English one is quite simple. Age, income, marriage and religion, etc. are taboos in English and people in western countries like to talk about weather when they meet each other; greeting in Chinese almost includes different things about one’s life. Appreciation in Chinese is not used frequently. Peo ple do not often say "thank you" to their families or friends. Appreciation in English can be used among families, friends, and colleagues and so on. At the end of this thesis, a conclusion is drawn; limitations and some suggestions of the research are stated!  相似文献

Movie,as a media, plays an important and irreplaceable role in culture dissemination. Therefore,a successful film subtitle translation deserves much of the credit.Based on Darwin’s adaptation and selection and combined with the adaptation theory, professor Hu proposed and developed Eco-translatology,which studies translation from the perspective of ecology. This theory defined translation as a translator's adaptation and selection activities in a translational eco-environment,which is the world present by the source text, the source language, and the target language, namely the integrity of language, communication, culture, society, readers, the author and so on.  相似文献

In the field of second language acquisition(SLA),weight has been increasingly attached to the role that a problem-pos ing model of education plays in English as second/foreign language(ES/FL)teaching and learning.By exploring various concepts of the problem-posing approach, also known as critical pedagogy, and its implications for English language teaching(ELT)in the Chinese postsecondary EFL context, the paper makes a tentative attempt to acknowledge the future directions of implementing critical pedagogy in the EFL context. Therefore, the paper is inspired by the ever-increasing popularity of the critical pedagogical approach in the ESL context. The application of critical orientation in language education derives from critical theories of the Frankfurt School, which centers on Marxist societal beliefs of struggling against social inequalities. With the concept of critical pedagogy drawing increasing attention from language educators and teachers alike in English-speaking countries;non-native English teachers who teach in the EFL context has also begun to focus their attention on the educational philosophy as a means to help transform traditional oppressed status of the Chinese EFL learners. From this perspective, this paper,by investigating the multi-dimensional implied meanings of implementing critical pedagogy in the EFL context, unraveling how it works as a way of"doing"in second language(L2)teaching and learning, identifying the probable contexts of critical pedagogy and the contesta tions surrounding critical pedagogy, aims to address the significance of implementing critical pedagogy as an effective way of re forming the ailing English education condition in China.  相似文献

Over the years I have gradually come to realize that poor handling ofthe relationship of language and cultures on the part of the teacher mightbe one of the causes of the students'cultural mistakes.Teachers may focuson linguistic forms and not remember the people who use the forms in or-dinary communication.Another cause might be the students’(and teache-rs')unfamiliarity with the differences between the Chinese and Englishlanguages and their respective cultures. As a result, many a student withgood grades in school in China performs poorly in social situation.  相似文献

Based on the researches of language transfer, contrastive analysis and error analysis, this paper tries to investigate the negative transfer of Chinese on Chinese students’English writings from the perspective of syntax.During one and a half months’teaching practice in Shannxi Hanzhong No.1 Middle School, the author lived through the real teaching process and found that there were lots of problems in students’English writings. The author makes a contrastive study of the different characteristics existing in Chinese and English languag es at the level of syntax, and analyses the typical syntactic errors appearing in the 60 students’English compositions collected from one or dinary class. These syntactic errors are caused by the negative transfer of Chinese. The purpose of the investigation is to study in what pat tern students have been influenced by Chinese in their English writings.Based on the findings and analysis of the mother tongue transfer on English writings, some implications are also provided in order to help minimize or eliminate the interference of negative transfer of the Chinese in students’English writings and improve the teaching and learning of English.  相似文献

Language transfer is one of the central questions in second language acquisition (SLA) study. It claims that learners’ the native language (NL) or first language (L1) will make great impacts, either promoting or hindering, on their second language (L2) acquisition, i.e. positive transfer and negative transfer. The issue has been widely concerned and researched in such relative fields as language education and psychological study during the past years. It is far beyond the scope of this paper to discuss it thoroughly since the scope of L1 influence is so wide that it affects almost all linguistic subsystems. Instead, this paper aims to focus on how the Chinese language facilitates Chinese learners’ English lexical acquisition. Some suggestions on how to make use of the positive aspects is provided at the end of the paper for practical purpose.  相似文献
